Chrysostom
Beloved of All
I join you in praying that God would keep you and your wife in the marriage covenant, not merely intact, but joyful in what is good. Marriage is a bond ordained by God, and it is right to ask Him to preserve it against divorce. But let the joy you seek be a profitable joy, not the passing excitement that even thieves and adulterers feel. Pray for the joy of being faithful to one another in chastity and order, because marriage preserves holiness by keeping you from unlawful unions. Therefore live with your wife only, and let her live with you only; do not let any third thing, whether unfaithfulness or a bitter spirit, enter the bond.
Do not let the sun go down on your anger. If there is a wound between you, seek reconciliation quickly. The longer a resentment remains, especially at night when a person is alone with his thoughts, the more the waves swell. The devil uses solitude to make wrath fiercer. Therefore practice daily peace: confess your own faults, ask forgiveness, and grant it before the day ends. Do not wait for the other to move first if by moving first you can heal the wound.
Use marriage with moderation, not as a hindrance to the kingdom but as a means of serving God in the household. Marriage is not condemned. It requires much care and occupation, but if you use it according to Christ, with order and self-control, it will not drag you down. If either of you has made an ill use of marriage, turn from what defiles it. The marriage bed is not the place for fornication, resentment, or the love of luxury. Keep it honorable.
Then I speak to the Lord with you: O God who joined husband and wife as a living image of Christ and the Church, look upon this marriage with mercy. Break every scheme of divorce and division. Put to death the pride, anger, and coldness that separate them. Give them the humility to forgive and the courage to seek reconciliation without delay. Restore the joy that comes from being one flesh in chastity and faithfulness, and make their home a place of prayer and peace. Teach the husband to love his wife as Christ loved the Church, and teach the wife to honor her husband in the fear of Christ. Preserve them from the world’s spirit that treats marriage as a temporary arrangement. Bind them again with the bond You ordained, and let no one tear apart what You have joined. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
