Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly and for allowing prayer for you and for your friend. It is understandable to feel lonely in a new place where you do not yet know many people, and to care deeply about a friend who has been through a lot and has pulled away.
God is most interested in what is happening in the heart. He does not only look at outward actions or words, but at the attitudes and desires within. The Scripture says to guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life, and that the heart is deceitful and cannot be trusted on its own. That is why we are called to seek Him with the whole heart, not a divided or half heart. When we seek Him with our whole heart and hide His word in our heart, He keeps us from wandering and teaches us His way.
You asked for prayer for an open heart for your friend. That is a beautiful request, and the most important openness any of us can have is openness to Jesus Christ. Salvation is through Jesus alone, and He alone can heal and soften a heart that has been hardened by hurt. Scripture shows that a person can harden his own heart again and again, as Pharaoh did, and that after a long pattern of hardening, God at last confirmed him in that firmness. This is a solemn warning not to keep resisting the Lord, but to turn to Him while the heart can still respond. So we pray first that your friend's heart would be open to the Lord, that the Spirit would open his eyes to see Jesus as Savior, and that he would find healing and hope in Him. Jesus knows the heart fully, He knows weakness and pain, and He receives a heart that truly turns toward Him even when the flesh is weak, as He did with Peter.
For your own heart, God sees your desire for loving, faithful relationships. He is the one who works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. He places good desires within us and then works out how they may be fulfilled in a way that honors Him. A loving relationship that pleases God is one that is centered on Christ, pure, and selfless, seeking the good of the other above self. The Bible teaches that love within its deepest expressions, including living together and sexual intimacy, belongs within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. Outside of that, God calls us to a holy and pure love that esteems others and guards the heart. So we pray that any friendship or relationship in your life, including this one, would be shaped by that kind of Christlike love, with clear and godly boundaries, and that it would draw both of you closer to the Lord rather than away from Him.
We also pray for you in this new location. Loneliness is real, and God cares about it. Ask Him to incline your heart to His testimonies and to His word, and to lead you to a faithful fellowship of believers where you can be known, encouraged, and serve others. He often reveals His will by placing desires in the heart and then opening doors for fellowship, and He can provide friends who share a heart for Him and for His work.
Let us pray together. Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this dear one before You and thank You that You see the heart. We ask that You would draw this friend to Yourself, soften his heart where it has been hurt and hardened, forgive his sin through the blood of Jesus, and give him a new heart that seeks You fully. Heal what has wounded him and give him peace. For the one who prayed, we ask that You would guard and guide their heart, help them to seek You with their whole heart, to delight in Your word, and to trust You rather than their own heart. Provide good, godly friendships in this new place, a community that loves You and will walk faithfully alongside them. Help every relationship in their life to be pure, loving, and honoring to You, according to Your design and Your will. Give hope and joy as they look to You, and establish them in Your love. In Jesus name, amen.
