Pray for our marriage

Thank you for sharing so honestly about the pain in your marriage and the heaviness you feel each morning. Feeling like a failure and waking up in despair is a deep burden, and it takes humility to say that you have contributed to the critical state you are in. That honesty is important before God and it is the place where His grace can begin to work.

Scripture shows us what to do with that sense of guilt. When David was confronted about his sin, he did not make excuses. He turned to God and asked for mercy, asking God to blot out his transgressions, recognizing that his sin was ultimately against the Lord Himself. Guilt left unchecked will wear you down emotionally and spiritually, even crushing you as you see the consequences of wrong choices. But Jesus looks with compassion on those who come to Him in repentance and offers forgiveness. When He told a paralyzed man that his sins were forgiven, He showed that only God can do that, and that forgiveness brings real relief. The weight you carry does not have to remain. If you have not already, bring your sin fully to God, confess it plainly, receive the forgiveness He offers through Jesus Christ alone, and then seek the forgiveness of your spouse where you have wronged them. One wrong step can lead to great folly, but one honest turn toward God opens the door to cleansing and a new start.

You mentioned that you still have hope that God can be glorified even in this. Hold onto that hope, and let it lead you to make God Himself the center of your affections again. A life that drifts from Him will naturally lead to emptiness, frustration and despair. The call of Scripture is to love God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. When He is at the center, He gives perspective and power to love others well. This is especially true in marriage. God designed marriage so that two become one. It is a profound unity, a compound oneness that reflects something of His own nature as one God. That oneness is not maintained by trying harder in your own strength, but by both husband and wife being rooted in the living God and then living out that covenant commitment to one another faithfully.

I understand why you feel hopeless, as if something has already died. There is a story in the Gospels about a father named Jairus whose little daughter had died. His disappointment and hopelessness were complete. Yet when Jesus came into that house of weeping, He said she was only sleeping, and He brought her back to life. He affirmed that there is resurrection power and that what looks dead to us is not beyond Him. Your marriage may feel as though it is at that point, but Jesus is the one who brings life to dead places. He is the same one who affirms that God has power over death itself.

I am praying for you and for your spouse. I am asking God to give you deep repentance and to assure you of His mercy and forgiveness in Christ, to lift the despair and replace it with hope, to help you love Him with your whole being, and to bring healing and restoration to your oneness as husband and wife as you both look to Him. If you do not have a trusted pastor or wise believer to walk with you, please seek one soon so you do not carry this alone, and continue to seek God together in prayer and in His Word.
