We are lifting you and your marriage before the Lord together and we thank you for your honesty in sharing this burden. We hear the weight of despair in your words when you say you wake up wondering why you are here and feeling like a failure, and we also hear the precious hope you still hold that all things can be for God's glory. That hope is true and God honors a heart that wants to give Him glory even in pain.
We believe with you that marriage is a holy covenant ordained by God between a man and a woman for life, and that what God has joined together, let no man separate, Mark 10:9. We do not take lightly that you say your marriage is in a critical state, and we strongly affirm God's heart for restoration and reconciliation within marriage. Even when we have failed, God is a God who redeems and restores. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose, Romans 8:28. That includes even the painful consequences of our own sin when we bring it to Him in repentance.
We want to gently correct the despair and condemnation you are carrying. Feeling godly sorrow for where you have fallen short is right and can lead to true repentance, but waking each day believing you are a failure and questioning your very purpose is not what God says about you. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1. The enemy wants you to live under condemnation, but the Lord says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18. He has said to us, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, 2 Corinthians 12:9. Your weakness and your failure do not disqualify you from His grace, they are the very place His power can be displayed if you will humble yourself before Him and before your spouse.
It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness, Lamentations 3:22-23. Each morning you wake up, even with those heavy thoughts, is a new mercy from God and a sign that He still has purpose for your life. He says, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness, Isaiah 41:10. And, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7.
We noticed you spoke of God's glory but did not mention the name of Jesus, and we must lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God the Father in His name alone. All forgiveness, all hope for your soul and for your marriage, flows from Him.
We encourage you to take responsibility with humble repentance before God and before your spouse without wallowing in self hatred. Confess what is your fault plainly, ask for forgiveness, and then receive the forgiveness Christ offers. Invite your spouse to seek the Lord with you, to pray together, to open the Scriptures together, and to seek godly counsel from a pastor or mature believing counselor who will uphold biblical marriage. Love your spouse as Christ loved the church, with sacrifice and humility, Ephesians 5:25, and be willing to forgive as Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32. Do not isolate in your despair. Reach out daily to the Lord and to trusted believers who can walk with you, and if the thoughts of despair become overwhelming, please reach out immediately to a pastor, counselor, or trusted person for help. Your life is precious to God and He has purpose for you.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift this dear one and this marriage to You. Lord, You see the critical state of this union, You see the pain, the guilt, and the despair, and You see the hope that remains for Your glory. We ask You to forgive where there has been sin and failure, to cleanse and restore as only You can. Touch this heart that feels like a failure and remind him daily that his identity is not in his performance but in Christ, that he is loved, redeemed, and held by Your right hand. Lift the spirit of despair and replace it with Your peace that surpasses understanding. Heal what is broken between husband and wife, soften both hearts, restore trust, communication, and love, and make this marriage a testimony of Your redeeming grace. Help them to seek You first, to pray together, to walk in humility and forgiveness, and to not let what You have joined together be torn apart. We ask that Your will be done in this marriage and that Your glory be revealed through its healing. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
