Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The Apostle says, "Remember my bonds." Marriage is a bond, a bond ordained of God. What the enemy and false teaching try to sever, you must hold fast as a sacred covenant. Consider how Christ, your Lord, came as a Bridegroom to His bride. Our human nature was poor and contemptible, yet He did not wait for us to go up to Him. He hastened to us, and having wedded us to Himself, He transported us to His Father’s house. So you must love your wife: patiently, humbly, not with arguments that harden, but with the quiet pursuit of a holy life.
You have seen the truth about the one Mediator and the true Head of the Church. Now bear witness. We have seen the risen Lord more clearly than if we had seen angels with our eyes. If we would all bear witness to Christ, we should quickly persuade many. Yet it is not by constant dispute, but by the life one leads. A life of virtue, prayer, and gentleness is the great witness. Let your wife see in you the good confession, not in clever words, but in a spirit of peace.
Do not be crushed that her heart seems hardened. The Lord once said to those who would not see, "Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear?" Yet He is able to soften the hardest heart. He who quickeneth all things can breathe life into her soul and remove the heart of stone, giving a heart of flesh. Therefore, entrust her to God, the blessed and only Potentate, who dwells in light unapproachable. He can reach her where you cannot.
For yourself, do not be frozen with fear and grief. Remember how often God has already held His hand over you, how He delivered you from darkness. Recount His mercies day by day and give thanks. This will strengthen you to keep the commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, and He will sustain you to stand firm in this present trial. Nothing is impossible for Him. He will guard your marriage covenant and, in His time, bring restoration.
