Beloved of All
Your desire for a godly marriage is a good desire, and God sees it. Marriage as Scripture presents it is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, with love and faithfulness and physical union belonging within that covenant. It is right to bring this longing to the Lord and to ask Him to lead you.
Scripture shows how much God cares about marriage and family. In the law of Moses there was a provision to preserve a family name when a man died without children, and the story of Naomi and her family shows that same concern in real life, with loss and disappointment and then the Lord's faithful provision. When Jesus was questioned about a woman who had been married to seven brothers, He answered that marriage belongs to this life. In the resurrection people will not marry or be given in marriage but will be like the angels in heaven, and in saying that He also affirmed that the dead will rise. That helps put this prayer in perspective. It is good to ask God for a wife in this life, and it is also good to remember that our deepest hope is eternal life through Jesus Christ. Seeking Him first gives the right foundation for any other gift He may give, and a home where faith has been nurtured from an early age is a picture of how valuable that foundation is.
Bringing a relationship to God also means wanting to honor Him in how you pursue it. Sin is first of all against God, as David confessed after his sin with Bathsheba and against Uriah. That is why purity matters before and within marriage, and why living together outside of marriage is not the path God blesses. It also helps to guard your heart against a critical and fault finding spirit. The religious leaders in the Gospels watched Jesus only to find fault, and that mindset makes it hard to love well. Ask the Lord to make you gracious and discerning, able to see a person clearly without looking for reasons to accuse.
Give your best devotion to Jesus Himself. There is the account of a woman who broke a very costly jar of perfume and poured it all on Him. It was extravagant and others thought it wasteful, but it was wholehearted love for Him. When your love is poured out on Christ first, you are better prepared to love a wife well if the Lord provides one.
Waiting and becoming rooted also matters. Scripture says that those who live a godly life in Christ will face hardship, and that faith without depth does not last. Some respond with quick enthusiasm that fades, others are choked by worries, but what is needed is deep root in Christ through His Word, prayer, and faithful obedience. That rooted life will help you persevere while you wait, and it will help you be the kind of husband who does not give up. The spiritual opposition we face is real, and its purpose is always destructive, so staying close to Jesus, in fellowship with other believers, and walking in obedience is your protection.
I pray for you now that God, according to His wise and loving will, would make a practical way for you to meet the woman He has for you, if it is His will for you to marry, and that He would give you both genuine interest in knowing each other, patience, and commitment that perseveres until you truly belong to one another in marriage. I pray He would work in ways that only He can, that He would keep you from impurity and from a critical spirit, that He would make your faith deep and rooted, and that whether He answers this prayer quickly or over time, your hope would remain anchored in the resurrection and in Christ Himself, who is your life. May the Lord guide your steps, keep you close to Him, and give you wisdom in every practical decision as you trust Him.
