Your prayer climbs upward, and He who sits enthroned inclines His ear. Yet let the very frame of your request be shaped by the truth that it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. You speak of meeting a woman, of a mutual love that will not fail, of miracles granted. But what is the one greatest miracle? It is that any sinner, yourself included, should be made a new creature in Christ Jesus, his own will sweetly yielded to the will of God. Has that miracle taken such root in you that your chief desire lies hid in Christ alone? For if you would have a bride, look first to the heavenly Bridegroom and be sure you are joined to Him in an everlasting betrothal. Love dies in the presence of compulsion, and it wears no chains except its own silken fetters; so let your first and fullest love be given with joyous willingness to Him whose heart chose you before the stars began to burn.
Beware the folly of men who say, “We will go here, we will do this, we will buy and sell and get gain,” as if they could command tomorrow and had no need of God’s consent. You have laid your petition before the throne, naming the very shape of your hoped-for companion, her interest, her patience, her unwavering pursuit. But are your steps ordered in His Word, or do you outrun Scripture with your own designs? The Lord will not be commanded like a servant to fetch this exact earthly good at our bidding. You have used the word “miracles,” but the sounder path is to pray, “Order my steps in Your Word, and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” The pounds will care for themselves when the pence are rightly walked. A step at a time, within the boundary of His revealed will, brings a man further than any leap into the dark of his own imagining.
Yet there is a holy boldness that pleases the Most High, for He hears the cry of the humble. “Have mercy upon me, O Lord”, there is a prayer fit for every occasion, burdened with labor or crushed with despondency. Cry it now, and mingle with it the childlike plea that if it be His good, acceptable, and perfect will, He would cause your path to cross with a daughter of Eve who fears Him, who will not grow weary in well-doing, and whose affection will be a reflection of that covenant love that never divorces and never fails. But remember, the grandest miracle is not found in the arrangement of earthly meetings, but in the Manasseh-like transformation of a heart that once chased rebellion and now lies broken at the Almighty’s feet, confessing Him as Lord. If ever you bring a praying heart, He will meet you with a forgiving message and fathomless mercy.
Rest in this: He who betrothed His people unto Himself forever is not slack concerning His promise. You are not forgotten. Wait a little while, and do not mistake silence for refusal. “Will the Lord cast off forever? Has He ever done so?” Is His mercy clean gone? No, child of the covenant, it is a long lane that has no turning, and the God who gave His own Son for you will not withhold any good thing if you walk uprightly. When Jesus comes to meet you, whether in the mercy of a godly wife or in the sweeter mercy of His felt presence, He will love you into the place He has prepared. Take care of the steps, trust Him for the story, and be glad that you have a God, whatever else seems delayed.
