How crowning a mercy is this! The tumor benignant, the Lord has heard our cry. Let every heart swell with inward gratitude; let the voice of joy resound, for we have come unto His presence with thanksgiving, and He has not sent us empty away. True prayer, though feeble on our lips, is ever acceptable to God, and here we see it answered as it were on the instant, at the right time, while the need pressed sore.
But do not now forsake the closet. Let this answered supplication bind you to the Mercy Seat with cords of love. The soul that would be strong must be much in prayer; starving Christians live at a distance from the throne. Now is the time to press on, to plead for a swift recovery, for each degree of returning strength is a new claim upon the Father’s affection. Continue in supplication, and if at any season liberty flags, pray for liberty. Knock, and knock again, until the door flies open.
Remember, it was the accord of many that brought this blessing. When saints agree, God pledges Himself to answer. Let the prayer meeting be precious to you; let it not wane. Discord and unholiness hinder prayer, but as we walk in humility and faith, drawing ever nearer to Christ, we shall see yet greater things. Depart from me? Nay, rather, “Come nearer to me, Lord,” for he who confesses his sinfulness and yet clasps the Saviour’s feet, is both humble and bold.
Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. This mercy looks back to the cross and forward to eternal glory. Tell it abroad, that others may learn to trust. For never, never shall a man be unsuccessful in prayer who sets his face to win the promised mercy, though the answer may tarry, though it come in a fashion we looked not for, it shall arrive. To God be the glory, great things He hath done.
