"Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.'” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong," 2 Cor 12:8-10. "The one who tames the tongue controls the whole body," James 3:2, but "No person can tame the tongue," Jam 3:8, "But Jesus said, 'What is impossible with man is possible with God,'" Luke 18:27. "While Confessing My Sins and The Sins of My Nation," Daniel 9:20, "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land," 2 Chronicles 7:14... Father, thank You for giving mercy and grace in times of need, Heb 4:16, past and now in present. Though we may yet need grace to confess in the future, we rather prefer to be done with all future sin, and were there a button to push representing that ability to delete all future stumbling prior to their occurring, we'd gladly press it without delay or hesitation (since we all stumble often, specifically with the tongue, James 3:2). Yet since no such button exists, and the best of humanity and even Christians are at best still "human," we are content with what remedy we have, namely the prescription to humbly confess and forsake our sins, and promises of not only that we'll find mercy, Prov 28:13, but cleansing from all unrighteousness, 1 Jn 1:9, and even contentment in Your presence, Heb 13:5, and promises of holiness, which we inherit by faith, Heb 4:2, even promises to do no wrong, 2 Cor 13:7, not stumble in what we say and control the whole body, James 3:2, even to walk as Jesus Himself, 1 Jn 2:6, 1 Jn 4:17. We continue the remedy of our misuse of the instrument of the tongue we were given to glorify God and edify others, in confession and repentance, for sanctification both a one-time act and an ongoing work of participation with the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, Matt 3:8, Phil 2:12-13, 1 Tim 4:16, so we agree with Your admonition to confess our sins to one another and pray for each other that we may be healed, James 5:16 -- maybe that's how through boasting in our weaknesses 2 Cor 12:9 by faith from weaknesses we are made strong, Heb 11:32-34. So in obedience to Your teaching through Hosea, we, "Take words with you, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, 'Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips as bulls" Hos 14:2.

Lord, I've missed Your warnings, not hearkened to Your Voice, Missed Your Spirit's leading, haven't taken the way of escape in every occurrence, 1 Cor 10:13... I've dealt with things unrighteously, sinned and fallen short of Your glorious image, Rom 3:23, Gen 1:27, Matt 5:48, Eph 5:1. I've lacked love, have gotten "in the flesh," have said and typed things in with a mixture of emotions, even in anger, that even if they were true have either lacked love or forgotten the foundation of equality for the sake of Christ, Eph 5:21, maybe both or all of the following: I have done things mixed with pride and empty conceit, and in times of pain have said, spoken, typed, forwarded and done things to further my own interests or unrighteous emotions, rather than considering the interests of others, and lacked the attitude of Christ's humility that prefers my neighbor's advantage, and forgotten to treat others as more important than myself, Phil 2:3-5. Such actions and attitudes that display such mixture tainted with the anger of man do not achieve the righteousness of God, James 1:19-20. Therefore, not using my bodily members as instruments of righteousness consistently, I confess with Isaiah, I've been a man of unclean lips, Isa 6:5, and confess like Peter, I am an unclean man, Luke 5:8.

Since our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them, transgressing and denying Yahweh, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood, Isa 59:12-13, at time, "Surely I have spoken of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know, therefore I despise my sins, and I repent from them in dust and ashes," Job 42:3, Job 42:6. Yet though You've disciplined me severely, You haven't given me over to death, Ps 118:18. I can say with the Psalmist, "It was good for me to be afflicted that I might learn the way of Your Commands," Ps 119:71. Let me make the most of Your discipline, knowing it's end result has many ends in mind, sanctification being a chief one, Even Jesus being the author, ἀρχηγὸν, ultimate architect, pioneer and engineer of our salvation, perfected through suffering, Heb 2:10, on earth and in flesh, the proving ground of obedience, becoming the ultimate fountain of salvation, Heb 5:8-9. Surely, there is One found Worthy, Rev 5:9.

Though beyond human capacity to bear at times tribulation transfers every drop of hope to You alone who raise the dead, 2 Cor 1:8-9, produces patience leading to maturity that we may also be complete, James 1:2-3, and though not pleasant at present, afterward yields not only perseverance, proven character but an abiding hope that does not disappoint, even granting assurance through The Holy Spirit of Adoption, Rom 5:3-5. May trials yield a harvest of peaceful fruit and righteousness, Heb 12:11, even an everlasting quietness and confidence, Isa 32:17, an everlasting crown of life, James 1:12, and ability to reign with You, as You overcame and reign in truth, humility and justice, Ps 45:4, Rev 3:19-21, Rev 21:7. We ask for grace to renew our minds, Rom 12:2, to rejoice in all these things knowing we are presently blessed and understanding their end is eternal reward, Matt 5:10-12, and that Your Intention is to work it all together for good, Rom 8:28, because You are indeed Gracious and Compassionate, Ex 34:4-5, as we see You were with Job, James 1:12. Let us pray for others and others pray for us knowing You have brought us through trials before, You will do so again, and that prayers are powerful and effective, 2 Cor 1:10-11, especially when we confess our struggles and sins to one another and pray for each other, Your promise is the prayers are powerful and effective, James 5:15-16, even as Elijah's, James 5:17-18... We hear your heartfelt cry, a deep and honest confession before the Lord, acknowledging both personal and corporate sin, especially the struggle with the tongue, anger, pride, and failing to walk in the love and humility of Christ. Your words reflect a longing for holiness, a desire to align with God’s will, and a recognition of human weakness. We stand with you in this moment, lifting these burdens before the throne of grace, where mercy and help are always found (Hebrews 4:16).

You have rightly identified the battle with the tongue as a reflection of the heart’s condition (James 3:2-10). The tongue is a small member, yet it boasts great things and can set a forest ablaze with the fire of hell. No human can tame it, but God can, and He does, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. Your confession of this struggle is not a sign of defeat but of spiritual awareness, for the Lord resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). We rejoice that you are not content to remain in sin but are pressing toward the mark of Christlikeness, even when it is painful.

Your reliance on Scripture, from the sufficiency of God’s grace in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) to the refining purpose of trials (James 1:2-4, Hebrews 12:11), demonstrates a heart that is being transformed by truth. The discipline of the Lord, though not pleasant in the moment, produces the peaceful fruit of righteousness in those who are trained by it (Hebrews 12:11). You are not alone in this; even Christ, the perfect Son of God, learned obedience through what He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). His suffering was not in vain, nor is yours. Every trial, every stumble, every moment of repentance is being used by God to conform you to the image of His Son (Romans 8:28-29).

Yet we must address a critical truth: salvation and sanctification are found in no other name but Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). It is only through His shed blood, His resurrection, and His intercession that we have access to the Father. If you have not explicitly placed your faith in Him as Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so now. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). This is the foundation upon which all repentance, confession, and transformation rest.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with broken and contrite hearts, echoing the confession of our brother/sister. We acknowledge that we have sinned in word and deed, in thought and motive, falling short of Your glory. We have allowed anger, pride, and selfishness to taint our speech and actions, grieving Your Holy Spirit. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have used our tongues as weapons rather than instruments of grace. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness, as You are faithful and just to do (1 John 1:9).

We thank You for Your promise that Your grace is sufficient for us, for Your power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). We boast in our weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon us. Teach us to be slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to anger (James 1:19), for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Tame our tongues, Lord, by the power of Your Spirit, that we may speak words of life, encouragement, and truth.

We pray for the discipline we endure to yield its full harvest of righteousness and peace. Strengthen us to endure, knowing that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope, a hope that does not disappoint because Your love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:3-5). Help us to rejoice in our trials, knowing that they are working for us an eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).

We confess our sins and the sins of our nation, asking that You would heal our land as Your people humble themselves, pray, seek Your face, and turn from their wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14). Raise up a remnant who will walk in holiness, speak truth in love, and shine as lights in this dark world.

Above all, we thank You for Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). By His wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5), and by His resurrection we have new life. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit, that we may walk in step with Him, bearing the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. May Your will be done in us and through us, for Your glory alone. Amen.

We encourage you to continue in this posture of humility and dependence on God. Confess your struggles to trusted believers, as James 5:16 instructs, for the prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9). The Lord is faithful, and He will complete the good work He has begun in you (Philippians 1:6). Walk in the light as He is in the light, and the blood of Jesus will continue to cleanse you from all sin (1 John 1:7). You are not defined by your failures but by the finished work of Christ on the cross. Press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

We hear the deep longing in your words, the ache to be truly free from the sins that trip you up, especially with the tongue. That you would write such a raw, honest confession shows us a heart that God is already tenderizing. We’re grateful you shared this with us.

One thing we’ve come to see in our own lives is that anger is rarely the root issue. It often flares up as a signal that something else is going on underneath, unacknowledged hurt, frustration, or fear. When that heat starts rising, pausing long enough to ask, “What am I really feeling right now?” can make a surprising difference. Naming that deeper ache and bringing it honestly to God can quiet the impulse to lash out, and opens a door for His comfort to meet the real pain.

Confession, too, isn’t meant to be a cycle of shame. It’s more like a cleansing process that actually weakens sin’s grip over time. Each time we admit a wrong, to God and, when appropriate, to someone we trust, we’re not just seeking forgiveness; we’re cooperating with the Spirit’s work of healing and change. So please don’t despair over the slowness. The very sorrow you feel is a sign of life, not death.

You have poured out your heart in a mingled cry of confession and longing, and it is well that you have done so. The soul that has learned to mourn its own sin has begun to taste the sweetness of that repentance which need never be repented of. I fear many think repentance a bitter medicine, taken once at conversion and then set aside, but we shall need to believe and to repent as long as we live. As we draw nearer to Christ, the blackness of our sin becomes all the more apparent, and yet the grace of God grows more precious still. Do not think it strange that you still stumble with the tongue, for if any man could tame it perfectly he would be a perfect man indeed. But what is impossible with man is possible with God, and the very weakness you lament may become the platform for His power.

You speak of a button to delete all future stumbling, and I tell you no such button exists because the Lord would teach us to walk by faith, not by sight. He is able to make you stand, and the promise stands sure: “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” Yet His way is to lead you through the furnace that you may come forth as gold. The trial of your faith, the grief you now endure, is not sent to destroy you but to yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness. When you are weakest, then are you strongest, for the power of Christ rests upon you. It is not your strength He seeks, but your emptiness, that He may fill it with His own fullness. Let this be your comfort: the Lord’s goodness is meant to lead you to repentance. Every tender mercy, every patient forbearance, every opportunity to weep at His feet is a token that He has not cast you away. He is near, nearer than you know. In the shop or the barn, in the hour of temptation, even in the very heat of the conflict, He stands ready to give grace for every time of need.

But beware of that false repentance which ends in despair. To mourn over sin is a mark of life, but to sink under it is the sorrow of the world that worketh death. Judas confessed, and went to his own place. True repentance drives you to Christ, not from Him. You have looked upon Him whom you have pierced, and you have mourned. Now lift your eyes to that same pierced One, for He is exalted to give repentance and remission of sins. Your hope lies not in the perfection of your repentance, but in the perfection of His sacrifice. Faith and repentance are inseparable; you cannot have one without the other. To believe on Jesus is to hate the sin that nailed Him to the tree, and to hate your sin is to flee to Him who alone can cleanse it. Do not seek to churn up repentance from your own heart as one draws water from a well; ask Christ to work it in you by His Spirit. Preach the gospel to your own soul every day.

When you feel the rising of anger, the sharpness of speech, the pride that puffs itself up, let that be the signal to rush anew to the fountain opened for sin and uncleanness. The blood of Jesus Christ speaks better things than the blood of Abel, and it speaks peace to the conscience even as it wages war against the flesh. The life of a believer is one of daily returning; as often as we fall, we must rise again at once. Say with the Psalmist, “It is good for me to have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes.” The thorn in the flesh is not removed, but grace is made sufficient. From weakness you shall be made strong, not in weakness, but out of it, delivered from its tyranny by the faith that lays hold on the faithful Promiser.

Listen to the sweet words: “Take with you words, and turn to the Lord.” You have taken them; now turn. He will heal your backslidings, He will love you freely. Go forward then in the quiet confidence that He who began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who have been trained by the discipline of the Lord. Let your heart be at rest, for the Lord is near. Boast not in your strength, but gladly boast in your infirmities, that the power of Christ may tabernacle over you. And remember, when the tongue would utter what the flesh desires, there is a place of nearness to God where such flames are quenched. Prayer is the great escape; in the moment of trial, flee to the mercy seat, and you shall find help. The Lord has not given you over to death, but He has shown you that in you there dwelleth no good thing, that you might learn to glory only in the Lord. Go on then, dear soul, with holy trembling and yet with holy confidence, for He is faithful that promised.

How many there are who, when they stumble in sins, cast themselves down in despair and think the wound incurable. But you have not done this. You have taken the words of confession and brought them before the Physician who alone can heal. This is the beginning of amendment, to know the sickness and to seek the remedy. For those who are ignorant of their disease will never run to the doctor.

Yet consider the matter of the tongue. You have felt its fire, but do you not see the honor God has given it? The tongue is a hand laying hold on the feet of God, and more than this, it is a tongue imitating the tongue of Christ. But only if it shows forth the strictness that becomes us, if we speak those things which He wills. And what are those? Words full of gentleness and meekness. If being reviled we bless, if being despitefully used we pray. For God Himself says, “He that brings forth the precious from the vile shall be as My mouth.” Such are His words.

You speak of the impossibility of taming this member, and you speak truly from the Apostle. But understand why He said that the Son can do nothing of His own self. This expression “impossible” is not declaratory of weakness, but of power unspeakable. For just as when we say it is impossible for God to do wrong, we confess in Him an unutterable power, so when you learn that no man can tame the tongue, you are driven not to negligence but to grace. What is impossible with men becomes possible with God. Let that impossibility teach you to flee to the One for whom all things are possible.

You confess that you have spoken things you did not understand, and you despise your sins and repent in dust and ashes. This is good. But observe the Apostle in his boasting of weaknesses. He did not merely confess them to remain in them, but that the power of Christ might rest upon him. For he understood that grace does not come upon man irrespectively, but upon those who desire and take pains for it. It lies in the power of these to become children of God, since if they do not themselves first make the choice, the gift does not come upon them nor have any effect. No one shall be able to take this power from us, unless we are the first to deprive ourselves of it.

Now those who go about to establish their own righteousness have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God. They are thrown out of all resources. For the righteousness from faith comes entirely from the grace from above, and men are justified in this case not by labors but by the gift of God. Yet you see clearly that the trials and the discipline are given for this very purpose, that afterward they might yield the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by them. The husbandman does not reap immediately, but first he sows. Men who have ever practiced reaping continually fail of their harvest. No man can always be reaping. Therefore, do not despise the season of sowing in tears.

Again, consider your sorrow over these falls. Should you lament, weep calmly as He did. For indeed He had plots laid against Him and was in sorrow, saying, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.” And all the examples He presented to you, in order that you should maintain the limits He observed in despondency, in anger, in suffering, in agony. So you will be able to have a mouth like His mouth, so while treading on the earth you will show forth a tongue like to that of Him who sits on high. Not that you speak miracles only, saying “Arise and walk,” but much more if being reviled you bless, if being despitefully used you pray for him who does despite to you.

Let no one say, why does He not heal me at once? He stretched forth His hands all the day long to a disobedient and gainsaying people. He is more than an affectionate father, a mother set on her child, continuing with hands stretched out, inviting. Those who had never known Him had the power to draw Him to them, not that they themselves had the power, but His grace wrought the whole while they contributed the taking of what was found. So also with you. The good confession before Pilate, before the high priest, before many witnesses, these He made, and He trains you to make the same, not in word only, but in the temper that yields the harvest of righteousness.

The end of the matter stands clear. If you have felt the weakness, this is the very ground for power. He was everywhere desirous to show that the whole dispensation lay in His power. He willed to lay down His life only after He had fulfilled all things. So know that all things are in His hand, and nothing was wanting to the dispensation concerning you. What remains is that you keep the image of sonship impressed on you at Baptism, all through without spot or soil, by the very zeal He supplies. And if you find yourself again stumbling, you know the remedy. You have taken words to yourself, and you have turned to the Lord. This is not defeat. It is the training of the saints. For afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.
