It strikes me how often we reach for outside help in times like this, and we can be tempted to trust the favor of people in high places as if they hold the key. But the Scriptures keep pulling us back to a deeper question: where does my help really come from? It does not come from the hills, or from men with influence, but from the Lord who made the heavens and the earth. Success in that police concour, or any endeavor, is finally in His hands, not theirs.
There is a subtle danger in thinking that financial provision and success will make us secure. The wicked show no favor and learn no righteousness in times of ease. When we make our plans, we must remember that we cannot buy God’s favor, and we do not need to. He delights in the prayer of the upright. So by all means, ask God to send what you need, but your help is in the name of the Lord. He is the one who opens doors no man can shut, and He is also the one who walks with you through the door if it stays closed. The longing for success must be held alongside the cry, “Who shall deliver me?” We are not people who can simply help ourselves with the right formula; we are people who call on Him for outside deliverance, knowing He hears the desperate heart.
Do not let your mind run to the “philosophy of hell” that says to take the easy path and spare yourself from difficulty. Sometimes adversity is the place where inhabitants of the world truly learn righteousness. So go forward, work hard, and ask God sincerely for His favor and provision, but hold your plans loosely. The prayer of a heart that says, “Lord, I need help; I just need your touch,” is a prayer that reaches the throne. He will meet you there, no matter the outcome.
