We have heard your request and we join you in prayer for this evening when your mother and her husband visit your home.
We understand how difficult this is for you, especially the tension you feel when he speaks to you as son and the history that makes that painful. God sees this struggle and He calls His people to something better than simply enduring an hour. Scripture says to follow peace with all men and holiness without which no one will see the Lord, and that the peace of God should rule in our hearts as an umpire when anger and resentment rise up to contend within us. That peace is not the same as pretending there is no conflict or simply avoiding trouble. It is the peace Christ Himself gives and leaves with His disciples, the peace that makes us stronger because we are first at peace with Him.
We will pray that the Lord gives you and your wife that kind of peace tonight, a steady and quiet heart, wisdom to speak with grace and truth, and strength to show honor to your mother while also guarding your home in love. We pray that He helps you respond without harshness even when you feel disrespected, and that He restrains what is unhelpful and brings calm to the conversation.
Let us pray together. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, the only way to You and the true source of reconciliation. We ask for Your peace to rest upon this home this evening. Rule in the hearts of this husband and wife, calm every thought that would lead to anger or revenge, and teach them to endure with patience and to speak as You would have them speak. Grant them self control, kindness, and clarity, and let their conduct reflect Your holiness and love. We ask for a peaceful hour, for protection over their marriage, and for wisdom to honor a parent rightly while holding to what is good and true. Fill this home with the peace that Christ gives, which prepares the way for love and bears witness that we are Your children. Make these two peacemakers in this situation for Your glory. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.
We encourage you to prepare your heart before they arrive with prayer and the Word, to agree together with your wife on how you will respond with grace, and to keep your focus on pleasing Christ above all. If difficult words come, answer gently and do not return insult for insult, trusting that God is at work even in trying relationships.
