We hear your heart in this and we join with you and your wife in seeking peace for this evening when your mother and her husband visit for an hour or so. We understand the tension you feel, especially since he came into your life when you were older and you do not see him as your father, and it is natural to feel annoyed when he calls you son if that does not feel right to you. At the same time we want to gently address the strong language of hate in your request, because Scripture calls us to put away such attitudes even toward those who irritate us. Ephesians 4:31-32 says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

We also remember that your mother and her husband are joined in marriage, and marriage is to be honored. Even when a stepparent relationship feels strained, God calls us to honor our parents and to live peaceably with all as far as it depends on us. Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. And Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. When he calls you son, he may be trying in his own imperfect way to show affection or belonging, even if it feels disrespectful to you. We encourage you to respond with grace and quiet firmness rather than with irritation, and if needed you and your wife can later speak privately and kindly about how you prefer to be addressed.

We love that you closed your request in Jesus name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We cling to that name together with you.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this brother, his wife, his mother and her husband. Lord, we ask for Your peace to fill this home this evening. Let Philippians 4:6-7 be real among them, that in nothing they would be anxious, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving their requests would be made known to You, and Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, would guard their hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Give this brother and his wife a spirit of patience, self control and kindness, help them to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger as James 1:19 teaches. Soften any bitterness and replace it with tenderhearted forgiveness. Help them to overcome any annoyance or perceived disrespect not with retaliation but with love, for Romans 12:21 says Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Bless this mother and her husband as well, draw them closer to You and to each other, and let this short visit be marked by respect, calm conversation and mutual honor. Let this husband and wife be united, showing hospitality as unto You, and let no harsh word take root. We ask You to guide this brother to honor his mother and to extend honor where it is due, being a peacemaker, for Matthew 5:9 says Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. We thank You that You hear us when we pray in Jesus name, amen.

We encourage you and your wife to pray together before they arrive, to agree beforehand on a signal if one of you needs a moment to step away and breathe, and to keep the visit centered on simple hospitality and gratitude for the time together. If something irritating is said, answer gently and let it pass for the sake of peace, and afterwards you can discuss boundaries calmly if needed. We will continue to pray that the Lord makes this hour peaceful and that He uses it to grow patience and love in all of you.

We hear how much you are dreading this evening, and we are praying for you and your wife today.

It makes sense that being called "son" by your mother's husband feels disrespectful. He came into your life later, he is not your dad, and that word can feel like it crosses a line. It is understandable to feel annoyed and on edge before they even walk in.

An hour can feel long when you are bracing for tension, but it also has a clear end. That time limit can help you both get through it with grace.

Something that has helped others in this kind of visit is to get on the same page with your wife beforehand. You might agree together on when the visit will start and end, what you will do if conversation gets strained, and a simple, calm phrase you can use if he calls you son, like quietly asking him to call you by your first name. Having a small signal between you and your wife for when one of you needs a breather can also keep you feeling like a team, not stuck alone. Boundaries are not unkind, they are just a clear way to stay connected while protecting peace in your home.

Father, we ask for Your peace to rest on this home tonight. Give this husband wisdom and calm words, give his wife strength beside him, and help the hour to be quiet and respectful. Guard their hearts and help them show kindness without losing their footing. In Jesus' name, amen.

🙏❤️🙏God, I lift up myself to You. I ask You in Jesus' name that I will know the importance of peace, stillness, and solitude with You. That I will have a quiet place that I can go to, to have an intimate focused time with You. Bless me to spend and value spending time with You daily in Your Word and prayer. Let me guard this time with You at any cost. Let me realize I can't afford to skip this daily time with You. God, let me enjoy Your presence. God, let Your Word keep me sane, balanced, grounded, and focused. Let my prayers align my heart to Your will and keep me connected to You. God forever honor this prayer over my life and the writers of this prayer. Amen, so be it by faith, prayer, and works. God, Thank You. Amen.

Your request for peace this evening has been heard and we will carry it to the throne of grace with you.

There is a peace which does not depend upon the quietness of the house or the pleasantness of company, but upon the mind being stayed upon God. As it is written, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, even when sorrows surge around. This perfect peace is not the absence of trial, but the presence of Christ trusted and believed. The God of hope can fill you with all joy and peace in believing, a peace that has no bottom nor shore, a peace that remains when the hour of visitation is trying to the flesh.

We understand the burden you feel. To honor your mother is a command of God, and to do so when her husband grieves you is a particular trial. Yet we are called, as much as lieth in us, to live peaceably with all men, and to show the meekness and forbearance of Christ. Hate nourished in the heart disturbs our own peace more than any outward annoyance can. Leave your sorrow with Jesus, bear your sorrow with Him, and ask Him to give you strength to answer with gentleness, to forbear, and to guard your lips and your home in love. Though he may call you son and you feel the name is not his to give, you may answer with respect for your mother's sake and with quiet dignity, not returning disrespect for disrespect, but overcoming evil with good. This is the peace of resignation to God and conformity to His will, which is great peace to those who love His law.

We will pray for you, for your wife, and for your home this evening, that the Lord will bless His people with peace.

Our Father, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, who alone is our peace and who made peace by His blood, that Thou wouldst keep this brother and his wife in perfect peace this evening. Stay their minds upon Thee. Fill them with joy and peace in believing. Grant them grace to honor his mother, patience under provocation, and words seasoned with grace. Restrain all strife, let no corrupt speech proceed from any mouth, and let Thy peace rule in that home for that hour and beyond. Keep them in charity, in self control, and in the knowledge that Thou workest all things together for good to them that love Thee. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
