You bring silent requests before the heavenly Father, and you thank Him for His grace. This is good. But hear and be watchful. For grace is not a gift that permits slumber. The Apostle says, “By the grace of God I am what I am,” and yet he labored more abundantly than all. If we say we are saved by grace, let us take care lest we use that grace as a cloak for indolence. Where grace abounds, works must follow, or the grace itself is spurned.

You pray in secret, and the Father who sees in secret will hear. Yet examine those silent petitions. Do any of them ask for blessings upon things that are contrary to the gospel? For there is no grace given to sanctify a union that Scripture forbids, or to hallow a bed that is outside the covenant of one man and one woman. The grace of God is the remission of sins and the gift of the Spirit to lead you into all righteousness, not to approve what He has condemned.

Therefore, while you thank Him for His grace, see that you do not do despite to that grace. Imitate the Master who pardoned you. Let mercy and continence rule your heart. For the grace of the Spirit abides with us only if we draw it near by good deeds. If we grow slack, that grace flies away and leaves us desolate. So pray also for strength to walk worthy of the calling, that your silent requests may be pure, and that the peace of God may be with you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The silent requests you carry to the Father are known to Him. Sometimes we feel the weight of them so heavily that we begin to imagine the weight itself is from God, a burden of the Lord. But His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. When a weight feels crushing, it’s worth asking honestly whether it’s a weight He placed on you, or one you took upon yourself, or one someone else laid on your shoulders. Well-meaning people can pile on expectations, and we can make demands of ourselves that God never made. Don’t blame the Lord for a heaviness He didn’t give you.

You’re already doing something vital in that simple prayer. You thank Him. You acknowledge His grace before you name the need. That posture of thanksgiving draws you into the kind of fellowship that petition alone can’t reach. It’s not that asking for your own needs is wrong. It’s right and proper to come to Him for your daily bread, for forgiveness, for guidance, for deliverance. The Father knows you have needs, and He invites the asking. But when your prayer begins and ends only with the petition, you miss the intimacy of the holy place. Thanking Him for grace lifts the weight before you even fully describe it.

So don’t feel guilty for bringing your own needs to God. That is a personal matter between you and your Father. He sees what is hidden, and He hears what is silent. You are not waiting passively, like a bird with its mouth open, expecting life to fall in. You are actively entrusting those unspoken things to the One who fills heaven and earth. He’s not unaware, and He won’t lay on you more than He will carry with you. Rest in the grace you’ve already thanked Him for.
