Please pray for my salvation

We have heard your honest cry and we thank God that you have brought this burden into the light, for that conviction you feel is the Holy Spirit drawing you to repentance and to truth. We want to pray with you and to speak plainly from Scripture about what it means to be saved.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly tell you that it is only by His name that we have access to God and can be saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 To be saved we must turn from our sin and place our faith in Jesus, believing that He died for our sins and rose again. That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Your concern about lust and living for pleasure is right and biblical, and we must address it directly. Jesus taught, everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28 Lust is not a small struggle, it is sin that defiles us and separates us from fellowship with God. The Scripture commands us, Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15 To fill our days with pleasure rather than with God is also to walk in the flesh. The Bible warns that in the last days people will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 2 Timothy 3:4 If we claim to belong to Christ while continuing to live willfully in sin without repentance, we deceive ourselves. Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be. We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer? Romans 6:1-2 True salvation brings a new heart that wants to turn from sin, not remain in it. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

At the same time, we want to encourage you that God is merciful to those who truly repent. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 The fact that you are convicted and desire to be saved is evidence God is working in you. Assurance does not come from feeling perfect, but from trusting the promise of God. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13

That you do not read the Bible much is part of why this battle feels so heavy. We cannot overcome lust in our own strength, we need the Word to renew our minds and the Spirit to strengthen us. How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9, Psalm 119:11 Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 We urge you to flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. 2 Timothy 2:22 This means making practical choices to cut off what feeds lust, to turn off and turn away from what tempts you, to fill your days with prayer and Scripture instead of empty pleasure, and to seek fellowship with other believers who will keep you accountable.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift up this soul before Your throne in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We ask that You would grant true repentance and saving faith, that he would confess Jesus as Lord and believe in his heart that You raised Him from the dead. Lord, forgive his sins of lust and of living for pleasure, cleanse him by the blood of Jesus, and make him a new creation. Give him a hatred for sin and a hunger for righteousness. Help him to flee sexual immorality and to walk by Your Spirit. Put in him a deep love for Your Word, that he would read it daily and hide it in his heart, and let Your Word be a lamp to his feet. Fill his days with Your presence instead of empty pleasure, and assure his heart that if he is in Christ he is truly saved and secure in You. Strengthen him to endure temptation and to live a life that honors You. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our only hope of salvation. Amen.

We encourage you to call upon Jesus today without delay, to confess your sin to Him plainly, to turn from lust decisively, and to begin each day in the Word and in prayer, trusting not in your own goodness but in the finished work of Christ alone to save you.

We are so thankful you were honest about where you are. To say out loud that you doubt your salvation and feel stuck in lust and distracted by pleasure takes real humility, and we hear how heavy that feels.

A lot of believers have been in that same place, wondering if their failures mean God has turned away. What we have seen over and over is that assurance grows not from trying harder to feel saved, but from looking to what Jesus has already done for us, and then letting Him gently reshape our daily life.

When the heart is full of other pleasures it is hard to want the things of God, and a lack of time in the Bible can leave you with only your feelings to measure by. One small, steady step can help more than a big resolution you cannot keep.

If it is helpful, try this for the next week or two. Set aside ten minutes at the same time each day to read slowly in one Gospel, like John, and to pray honestly about what you read and where you struggle. And consider asking one mature, trusted pastor or believer in your local church if you can meet briefly each week to be honest and pray together. Having another person walk with you makes a real difference.

Father, we lift this dear one to You in Jesus' name. You see his honesty and his longing to know You. Draw him close, give him clarity about Your grace, and give him strength and wisdom to turn from what entangles him. Create a growing hunger for Your presence and Your word, and surround him with faithful help as he walks forward. Amen.

Your honest confession before the Lord is itself a token that His hand may already be at work upon your soul, for the heart that is wholly hardened does not mourn its sin nor question its state.

You write that you do not believe you are saved, that lust besets you nearly every day, that your days are filled with pleasure and the Bible is little read. Hear then what the Scripture says of salvation, that you may not look in the wrong place for hope.

Do not look to the perfection of your repentance or to the measure of your Bible reading to save you. There are degrees of repentance, and yet the least repentance will save the soul if it is sincere. You must not expect that you will be perfect in repentance before you are saved. Repentance is not a preparation for grace, it is the first result of grace working within the soul. It is a blessed gift of God the Holy Spirit, and where God gives it, the work of salvation has been already begun. True repentance gives God glory. It makes a man look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only. A carnal repentance is of the flesh and frets under judgment, but a godly repentance grieves for sin itself because it has offended a gracious God, and it turns with hope to the finished work of Christ.

And faith and repentance are inseparable. The repentance which brings salvation is that which avoids present sin because of the love of God who died for us, and trusts Christ to forgive as He has promised. If you trust for salvation to your repentance, or even to your faith, you might as well trust to your sins. Nothing is to be trusted but the finished work of Jesus Christ upon Calvary's bloody tree.

Therefore the way of salvation is plain and simple, and it is without money and without price. The Scripture says, Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, and again, Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed. What is believing on Him. It is trusting in Him. It is not believing about Him, but believing on Him, depending upon Him without fear as to your present and eternal salvation. A look does not require a moment, and yet that look to Christ saves. Leave the whole matter of your salvation with Him in unquestioning confidence. He is able to save the meanest of His sheep, and His honor is engaged to keep them.

Do you know anything of such a repentance and such a faith. Answer as before the Lord whom no man can deceive. If lust has ruled you and pleasure has filled your days, that is sin to be confessed and forsaken, not excused. The same grace that forgives will also teach you to deny ungodliness. Repentance lives as long as faith, it is not a bitter operation once endured and then forgotten, but a sweet and abiding grace that keeps the soul low and looking to Christ. And when joy has been lost by falling into sin, it may be restored, for David prayed, Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free Spirit. He was a man saved and yet needing to be kept from falling again.

So come to Christ as you are, as nothing, and trust Him now to forgive you. Tell Him plainly that you have sinned in thought and deed, that you have loved pleasure more than Him, that you have neglected His Word, and ask Him to give you that repentance unto life which is unto salvation. Then, because you are forgiven, give yourself to the means by which He keeps His people, a daily and humble reading of His Word, watchfulness over the eye and the heart, and prayer for strength to walk in holiness. Do not stay away from Christ till you are better, but come to Him that you may be made better.

We will pray for you to this end, that the Lord who is rich in mercy would grant you repentance and faith as His free gifts, that you would look unto Jesus and be saved, that He would cleanse you from the power of lust and turn your heart from vain pleasure to delight in Himself, that He would restore to you the joy of His salvation and uphold you with His free Spirit, and that you would trust not in your own tears or resolves but in Christ alone, who saves without money and without price.
