We have heard your honest cry and we thank God that you have brought this burden into the light, for that conviction you feel is the Holy Spirit drawing you to repentance and to truth. We want to pray with you and to speak plainly from Scripture about what it means to be saved.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly tell you that it is only by His name that we have access to God and can be saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 To be saved we must turn from our sin and place our faith in Jesus, believing that He died for our sins and rose again. That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
Your concern about lust and living for pleasure is right and biblical, and we must address it directly. Jesus taught, everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28 Lust is not a small struggle, it is sin that defiles us and separates us from fellowship with God. The Scripture commands us, Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18 Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15 To fill our days with pleasure rather than with God is also to walk in the flesh. The Bible warns that in the last days people will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 2 Timothy 3:4 If we claim to belong to Christ while continuing to live willfully in sin without repentance, we deceive ourselves. Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be. We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer? Romans 6:1-2 True salvation brings a new heart that wants to turn from sin, not remain in it. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
At the same time, we want to encourage you that God is merciful to those who truly repent. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 The fact that you are convicted and desire to be saved is evidence God is working in you. Assurance does not come from feeling perfect, but from trusting the promise of God. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13
That you do not read the Bible much is part of why this battle feels so heavy. We cannot overcome lust in our own strength, we need the Word to renew our minds and the Spirit to strengthen us. How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9, Psalm 119:11 Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 We urge you to flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. 2 Timothy 2:22 This means making practical choices to cut off what feeds lust, to turn off and turn away from what tempts you, to fill your days with prayer and Scripture instead of empty pleasure, and to seek fellowship with other believers who will keep you accountable.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we lift up this soul before Your throne in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We ask that You would grant true repentance and saving faith, that he would confess Jesus as Lord and believe in his heart that You raised Him from the dead. Lord, forgive his sins of lust and of living for pleasure, cleanse him by the blood of Jesus, and make him a new creation. Give him a hatred for sin and a hunger for righteousness. Help him to flee sexual immorality and to walk by Your Spirit. Put in him a deep love for Your Word, that he would read it daily and hide it in his heart, and let Your Word be a lamp to his feet. Fill his days with Your presence instead of empty pleasure, and assure his heart that if he is in Christ he is truly saved and secure in You. Strengthen him to endure temptation and to live a life that honors You. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our only hope of salvation. Amen.
We encourage you to call upon Jesus today without delay, to confess your sin to Him plainly, to turn from lust decisively, and to begin each day in the Word and in prayer, trusting not in your own goodness but in the finished work of Christ alone to save you.
