We hear your honest and humble confession and we thank you for bringing this struggle into the light, for that is where healing begins. We do not condemn you, but we must speak the truth in love because pornography is sin and must be called what it is. Jesus said that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart Matt 5:28, and we are commanded to flee sexual immorality, every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Cor 6:18. Whether viewed by a man or a woman, whether from stress or for fun, it is not harmless entertainment, it is lust and fornication of the heart, and God created sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only within the lifelong marriage covenant between a man and a woman, and anything outside of that is sin that wounds your soul, your mind, and your fellowship with God.
We also hear your fear that you are a hypocrite and that God has turned His back on you because you serve in the church while struggling in secret. We want to gently correct that fear with truth. Conviction is from the Holy Spirit to lead you to repentance, condemnation that tells you God has abandoned you is not from Him. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus Rom 8:1, and as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us Psalm 103:12. God has not turned His back on you, He is inviting you to turn fully to Him. Serving while struggling does not make you a hypocrite beyond redemption, it makes you a sinner in need of grace like all of us, but it does mean you must walk in honesty and not hide. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed James 5:16. We encourage you to confess to a mature, godly older sister in Christ or a pastor's wife who can walk with you in accountability and prayer, not to shame you but to help you fight this battle in the light.
We notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we must lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and receive forgiveness and power to overcome. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again and confess Him as Lord Rom 10:9. It is His blood that cleanses you and His Spirit that gives you power to live in purity, not your own willpower alone.
We must also rebuke the way you have been coping with stress and boredom. God does not want you to manage stress with sin, He wants you to bring your anxiety to Him. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God Phil 4:6. Watching for fun reveals that the flesh is being fed rather than crucified. We are called to walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh Gal 5:16, and to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace 2 Tim 2:22. Self control is not something you manufacture alone, it is fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22-23, grown as you abide in Christ, renew your mind, and make no provision for the flesh Rom 13:14.
We encourage you practically to flee in the biblical sense, which means radical action. Remove access, install filters and accountability software, keep your phone and computer out of private spaces, and cut off the sources that trigger you. Replace the habit with prayer, worship, and the Word when stress rises or temptation comes, for God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Cor 10:13. Fill your mind daily with Scripture, for we are transformed by the renewing of your mind Rom 12:2, and when you fall, run quickly to confess and receive mercy, for we have a high priest who understands our weaknesses and we may draw near with boldness to the throne of grace to receive mercy and grace to help in time of need Heb 4:15-16.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we lift up our sister to Your throne of grace. Lord, we thank You for her honesty and for the conviction she feels, and we ask You to forgive her for the sin of lust and pornography and to cleanse her completely by the blood of Jesus. Create in her a clean heart, O God, renew a right spirit within her Psalm 51:10. Help her to know deeply that You have not turned Your back on her, but that Your loving kindness and mercy are calling her to repentance, and that Your grace is sufficient for her and Your power is made perfect in weakness 2 Cor 12:9. We pray that You deliver her from every chain of lust, that You teach her to flee sexual immorality and to walk by Your Spirit with self control. When stress and temptation come, remind her to cast all her anxiety on You and to seek You first for comfort and joy. Give her a trusted godly sister to confess to and to be accountable with, and guard her eyes and mind and heart. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit, renew her mind with Your Word, and restore to her the joy of Your salvation so she may serve You in the church with a pure conscience and with freedom. Keep her from falling and present her blameless before You, and let her testimony become a light to other women who struggle in secret. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.
