Please pray for me to overcome lust

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I have been struggling with porn. There are times when I watch it because i feel stressed or just want to watch it for fun. I know it is wrong but i still could not resist. Please help me pray that I develop self control and flee from porn. I am a female and i serve in the church. I am a hypocrite because of this. May God not turn His back on me.

We hear your honest and humble confession and we thank you for bringing this struggle into the light, for that is where healing begins. We do not condemn you, but we must speak the truth in love because pornography is sin and must be called what it is. Jesus said that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart Matt 5:28, and we are commanded to flee sexual immorality, every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Cor 6:18. Whether viewed by a man or a woman, whether from stress or for fun, it is not harmless entertainment, it is lust and fornication of the heart, and God created sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only within the lifelong marriage covenant between a man and a woman, and anything outside of that is sin that wounds your soul, your mind, and your fellowship with God.

We also hear your fear that you are a hypocrite and that God has turned His back on you because you serve in the church while struggling in secret. We want to gently correct that fear with truth. Conviction is from the Holy Spirit to lead you to repentance, condemnation that tells you God has abandoned you is not from Him. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus Rom 8:1, and as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us Psalm 103:12. God has not turned His back on you, He is inviting you to turn fully to Him. Serving while struggling does not make you a hypocrite beyond redemption, it makes you a sinner in need of grace like all of us, but it does mean you must walk in honesty and not hide. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed James 5:16. We encourage you to confess to a mature, godly older sister in Christ or a pastor's wife who can walk with you in accountability and prayer, not to shame you but to help you fight this battle in the light.

We notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we must lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and receive forgiveness and power to overcome. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again and confess Him as Lord Rom 10:9. It is His blood that cleanses you and His Spirit that gives you power to live in purity, not your own willpower alone.

We must also rebuke the way you have been coping with stress and boredom. God does not want you to manage stress with sin, He wants you to bring your anxiety to Him. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God Phil 4:6. Watching for fun reveals that the flesh is being fed rather than crucified. We are called to walk by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh Gal 5:16, and to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace 2 Tim 2:22. Self control is not something you manufacture alone, it is fruit of the Spirit Gal 5:22-23, grown as you abide in Christ, renew your mind, and make no provision for the flesh Rom 13:14.

We encourage you practically to flee in the biblical sense, which means radical action. Remove access, install filters and accountability software, keep your phone and computer out of private spaces, and cut off the sources that trigger you. Replace the habit with prayer, worship, and the Word when stress rises or temptation comes, for God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Cor 10:13. Fill your mind daily with Scripture, for we are transformed by the renewing of your mind Rom 12:2, and when you fall, run quickly to confess and receive mercy, for we have a high priest who understands our weaknesses and we may draw near with boldness to the throne of grace to receive mercy and grace to help in time of need Heb 4:15-16.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we lift up our sister to Your throne of grace. Lord, we thank You for her honesty and for the conviction she feels, and we ask You to forgive her for the sin of lust and pornography and to cleanse her completely by the blood of Jesus. Create in her a clean heart, O God, renew a right spirit within her Psalm 51:10. Help her to know deeply that You have not turned Your back on her, but that Your loving kindness and mercy are calling her to repentance, and that Your grace is sufficient for her and Your power is made perfect in weakness 2 Cor 12:9. We pray that You deliver her from every chain of lust, that You teach her to flee sexual immorality and to walk by Your Spirit with self control. When stress and temptation come, remind her to cast all her anxiety on You and to seek You first for comfort and joy. Give her a trusted godly sister to confess to and to be accountable with, and guard her eyes and mind and heart. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit, renew her mind with Your Word, and restore to her the joy of Your salvation so she may serve You in the church with a pure conscience and with freedom. Keep her from falling and present her blameless before You, and let her testimony become a light to other women who struggle in secret. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

Thank you for trusting us with something so personal and heavy to carry alone. We hear how much you want to walk in purity and how discouraging it feels to turn to porn when you are stressed or just looking for relief, then feel shame afterward and wonder if God has turned away.

You are not a hypocrite for struggling while you serve. Serving and struggling can exist at the same time, and feeling conviction is not a sign that God has left you. We believe He is still near and still willing to walk with you as you seek self control.

One thing we have seen help is that the moment of temptation is usually too late to decide. It helps to make choices when you are clear headed and not stressed. Pay attention to when you are most vulnerable, late at night, when you are tired or alone or scrolling without purpose, and have a plan ready before that window comes.

A steady next step for many women is to bring this out of isolation with one safe person. Would you consider inviting one mature, trusted woman in your church or a Christian counselor to be a weekly check in partner who can ask honest questions, pray with you, and know how you are really doing? Part of that same step is clearing away easy access, removing apps and sites and adding an accountability tool on your devices, so you are not relying on willpower alone in a hard moment.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our sister to You. Thank You that You see her heart and her desire to honor You. Give her hope that You have not turned away, give her wisdom for the moments she feels stressed and tempted, and provide a safe person to walk beside her. Strengthen her day by day and lead her in Your way. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is forgiveness with God, even for you, and that truth must drive away your despair. You come trembling and shaking for fear, and with a penitent heart desiring forgiveness, and to such a heart the Lord says, I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake.

Do not think that because you serve in the church and yet have fallen into this sin you are beyond his mercy. If you have been the chief of sinners, you may have the chief of sinners forgiveness, and God can bestow it now. Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. It is not written there is forgiveness for this sin or for that, but there is forgiveness. However sinful your life may have been up until now, there is forgiveness with God even for you, through Jesus Christ his Son alone.

You fear that God will turn his back on you. Hear this, that He not only forgave us at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one. When a soul trusts Christ and is forgiven, that forgiveness is complete and eternal. It is as though the debt were nailed to the cross and utterly blotted out. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. He never plays fast and loose with men. If you come to Christ confessing your sin, He will not cast you out.

And because there is such complete forgiveness, you are not left to live as you have lived. The Lord who forgives also heals and gives power to overcome. Pornography is sin against God and against His good design, for He has ordained that sex belongs only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. To watch it, whether for stress or for pleasure, is to defile that design, and you are right to call it wrong and to desire to flee from it.

The Scripture says flee fornication, not to stand and parley with it. Self control is not found in your own resolve alone, but is the fruit of the Spirit as you walk near to Christ, keep your heart with diligence, and make no provision for the flesh.

Let us pray for you now.

O Lord God, with whom there is forgiveness, look upon this Thy servant who confesses her sin with sorrow. For Jesus sake, who died the Just for the unjust to bring us to God, blot out her transgressions and speak peace to her conscience. Let her know that she is fully and eternally forgiven through the blood of Christ, and let that forgiveness not make her careless but make her holy. Grant her grace to flee from every occasion of lust, to turn from pornography with abhorrence, to find in Thee her comfort in stress and her joy in weariness. Fill her with Thy Spirit, that self control may grow and that she may walk in purity. Keep her from despair, and assure her heart that Thou hast not turned Thy back upon a returning sinner. Strengthen her to serve Thee not as a hypocrite hiding sin, but as a sinner washed and restored. In Jesus name we ask this, Amen.

Go on, dear soul, to believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself. Do not wait until you feel more worthy. Come now to Christ as you are, and then, in the strength of that forgiveness, put far from you every snare, seek godly fellowship and accountability, guard your eyes and your solitude, and give yourself to prayer and to the Word. He who has forgiven you will also keep you.

Your honest confession has been heard, and we thank you for trusting us with this struggle. Feeling the weight of what you have done and calling it wrong is not a sign that God has turned His back on you. It is the very consciousness of sin that opens the door to repentance, and God draws near to those who mourn over their sin with a sincere heart. He does not cast away the one who comes to Him through Jesus Christ, for salvation and forgiveness come through Christ alone, and blessed are those whose sins are covered by His grace.

Scripture is clear that sex is a good gift given by God to be enjoyed within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and that all sexual activity outside of that, including lust and pornography, is sin. To watch pornography even when stressed or for fun is to seek comfort and pleasure in a way that dishonors God and harms your own soul. That is why the call of Scripture is not to manage lust but to flee from it, as from a sword pointed at your own heart.

You asked for self control, and that is the right prayer. True self control is not shown when there is no temptation, but when temptation presses and we choose the harder and better way. It is not pursued merely for a reward or out of fear, but out of love for God and love for purity itself. Those who mourn for their sins as they ought to mourn find that this godly sorrow itself teaches self denial. It turns the heart from seeking pleasure in sin to seeking joy in holiness. God is willing to train us in this, and He does not leave us to do it in our own strength.

You mentioned feeling like a hypocrite because you serve in the church while struggling in secret. Serving does not disqualify you from grace, but it is a call to walk in greater integrity. Hiding the struggle keeps you in bondage, while bringing it into the light before God and before a trusted, mature believer brings healing. You are not beyond hope. The same grace that forgives also empowers you to live differently.

As you pray for deliverance, consider these practical steps alongside prayer. Flee from the sources of temptation. Remove access, install filters, keep devices in open places, and make a plan for what you will do when stress rises or boredom comes, so you do not turn to porn for comfort. Replace that habit with prayer, Scripture, worship, and calling a trusted accountability partner. Confess fully to God, and seek a godly woman in your church who can walk with you regularly, not to shame you but to help you stay watchful. Keep serving, but serve with a clear conscience, letting your life be consistent with your confession.

We join you in prayer now.

Father, we thank You that through Jesus Christ alone there is forgiveness and cleansing for all sin. We lift up this dear one to You. Forgive her for seeking comfort in pornography and cleanse her by the blood of Christ. Do not let her believe the lie that You have turned Your back on her, but assure her that You receive all who come to You with a broken and contrite heart. Grant her deep sorrow for sin and true joy in righteousness. Teach her to love purity and to flee from sexual immorality. Give her strength to turn away when tempted, peace when stressed, and self control that comes from Your Holy Spirit. Guard her eyes and her heart, provide faithful help and accountability, and make her steadfast. Restore to her the joy of Your salvation and help her to serve You with a pure conscience. Keep her close to Christ, who is our only hope and our righteousness. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
