Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing your heart so honestly. The pain you are carrying is very heavy, and it is understandable that you feel overwhelmed as you grieve the loss of your partner while also facing fear about housing for you and your daughter, struggles with sleep and nightmares, and injuries to your teeth and arms.
What you describe is the place of deep hopelessness that so often sits behind depression. When it feels there is no way out and nothing you can do, the heart sinks to the bottom. One of the prophets in Scripture described himself in that same place, saying he had forgotten peace and prosperity and felt removed from hope. He knew what it was to be in turmoil and destitution, with tears that would not stop.
Yet in the midst of that very despair, he found a turning point. He said, this I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. He chose to set his mind on the Lord rather than only on his circumstances. We can think ourselves deeper into despair, or by renewing our minds on who God is we can be lifted into hope. That hope is not blind wishing. It rests on the character of God. Though He allows grief, He will have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. He does not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. His mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is great.
That is important for you to hear right now. Your grief is real and God sees it. The sorrow you feel, which you describe as your heart being torn, is not hidden from Him. At the same time, your life is not forgotten or without purpose. To wish that Jesus had taken you instead, or to wish you could fall asleep and not wake up, shows how deep the despair has become. Please hear that God has not abandoned you, and He does not want you to walk through this alone in your room. If these thoughts grow stronger, please reach out right away to a trusted person, a pastor, a counselor, or a medical professional, and if you ever feel you might act on them, please seek help immediately from someone near you or a crisis helpline in your area. You and your daughter both need support around you.
Fear and despair also have a way of magnifying everything. When we are afraid we often see only half the story, only what is in front of us, and we expect the worst. Scripture reminds us that if we could see the whole story God is writing, we would respond very differently. You do not know yet what God has in store ahead. Like Job, who felt that God's arrows were against him and that his grief was heavier than the sand of the sea, you cannot see from this valley what God may still bring in the days ahead. Life lived apart from God does lead to despair, as many have discovered, because this world is full of sorrow. But life with Christ is different. He is the one who delivers when we come to the end of our own strength. When we cry, who will deliver me, the answer is Jesus Christ our Lord, who gives victory through His Spirit dwelling in us. He alone is our salvation and our hope.
We are praying for you and your daughter in the name of Jesus, the only Savior, that God would show His compassion and mercy to you in very practical ways.
We pray that the Lord would provide stable housing for you both, that you would be able to remain where you are until after Christmas and that God would open a clear path for secure housing beyond that, according to His provision.
We pray for your health, for healing of your arms without infection and without lasting scarring, and for your teeth and jaw as you grind your teeth in your sleep. Please do have a doctor and dentist check these injuries soon, as God often provides healing through care He has made available.
We pray for your mind and sleep, that the nightmares and waking in tears would ease, that God would guard your heart and mind in Christ and give you rest. We pray that He would lift the heavy grief and replace hopelessness with a renewed hope as you set your mind on His mercies each day.
We pray that you would be able to rejoice in the Lord even while you weep over your circumstances, not because the circumstances are good, but because He is good and His compassion does not fail. May He surround you and your daughter with caring people who can walk with you, help you with practical needs, and point you to His Word.
You are not alone in this grief. Keep looking to Jesus, keep asking for His help each day, and keep letting others help you. He is faithful, and He hears those who call on Him.
