We join you in lifting up your niece before the throne of grace and we hear the heaviness and sadness you all carry for her. We understand your concern when you see a young woman you love being led in a direction that worries you, and we want to seek God's perfect will together with you in Jesus' name.
The Word reminds us that relationships shape character, for 1 Corinthians 15:33 says Bad company corrupts good morals, and Proverbs 13:20 says One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. We are also taught in 2 Corinthians 6:14 not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with iniquity. This is why we believe courtship between a man and a woman should be intentional and pure, with the goal of finding a godly spouse for a lifelong marriage that honors God, and any relationship that pulls a person away from wisdom, purity, and faith should be examined with great care and prayer. If there is any sexual intimacy outside of marriage in this relationship, we must gently say that Scripture calls this fornication and calls us to flee from it, for 1 Corinthians 6:18 says Flee sexual immorality, and God desires that we honor Him with our bodies.
We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, and Acts 4:12 tells us There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by trusting in Jesus Christ, believing He died for our sins and rose again as Romans 10:9 teaches, that our prayers are heard.
Rather than praying simply that this young man would find another girlfriend so he moves on, we want to pray according to God's heart for both your niece and for him, that God's will be done and that both would be drawn closer to Christ and to what is best for their futures.
We pray together now, Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this precious niece to You. You know her heart, her struggles, and the influence this relationship has on her. We ask You to give her wisdom, for James 1:5 promises If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. Open her eyes to see this relationship as You see it, guard her heart and mind, and surround her with godly counsel and good company. If this courtship is not according to Your will and not leading toward a godly marriage between believers, we pray You would make that clear and give her the courage to step away in peace. We also lift up this young man to You, not with ill will, but with love, asking that You would work in his life, draw him to Yourself, convict him where he needs correction, and lead him onto Your path for his own good, whether that includes another relationship in Your timing or a season of growth alone with You. Comfort this family in their sadness, for Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us to bring our anxieties to You and Your peace will guard our hearts. We trust that You are working all things for good for those who love You according to Romans 8:28. Help this family to speak the truth in love to their niece, to not control but to guide, to model Christ, and to continue in patient prayer. We ask all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We encourage you to continue to love your niece with grace and truth, to keep communication open without condemnation, to pray with her when she allows it, and to point her toward Scripture and toward fellowship with mature believers who can encourage her toward a godly marriage in the Lord's timing. Trust the Lord to work even when you cannot see the answer immediately.
