Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your body cries out with pain, but do not think the blood of goats or the skill of doctors alone can grant true healing. For if the blood of bulls could purify the flesh, how much more shall the Blood of Christ purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Your high blood pressure, your chest pains, your ulcer, these are but outward signs of a deeper corruption that only the great High Priest can touch. He entered once into the holy place, not with the blood of animals, but with His own, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Yet you grasp for comfort while holding fast to sin. What pleasure has drunkenness or fornication brought you? The itch of lust is not delight but a fever that leaves the soul putrefied, my wounds stink and are corrupt, said the Psalmist. You seek peace for your family, but there is no true peace while wickedness rots within your house.
I wound you with these words because I must, not willingly, but as one commanded to cry out against the abominations that drag souls to hell. The mere hearing of that judgment is a cure, if you receive it, bracing the spirit and casting out the foul desires that inflame your flesh. Look to the Blood of the New Covenant, shed for you for the remission of sins. Without shedding of blood there is no remission, not a drop from your own veins, but the precious flood from His side.
Turn from the fleeting pleasures that end in disgrace and death, and embrace the toil of righteousness which yields eternal rest. If you nourish your body on prayer and purity, you may find even the physician's work sufficing. But if you wallow in the mire, no medicine will rescue you. Let the hope of glory lift you up, and your family will know a comfort beyond all human consolation.
