We hear your heart in this difficult situation and we join with you in seeking God's will together in Jesus' name. It is painful when a friendship and finances become tangled, especially when you worked in good faith expecting payment that was agreed upon and now you are being asked to give your labor for free. We know God sees your work and He cares about justice and honesty in our dealings with one another.
The Scripture is clear that withholding what is rightfully due to a worker is not pleasing to God. Leviticus 19:13 says You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. And James 5:4 reminds us Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies. God values honest weights and fair dealings, for Proverbs 11:1 says A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight. At the same time He calls us to pursue peace as far as it depends on us, for Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
We also noticed your request asked for prayer to God but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to gently share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you to place your trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, so that your prayers are heard and your relationship with God is restored through Him.
We lift this matter before the Lord now. Father, we bring our brother before You in the name of Jesus Christ and ask for Your wisdom and justice to prevail in this payment issue. You know the work that was done and the agreement that was made, and You see the disappointment and stress this has caused. We ask that You soften the heart of his friend and bring conviction to honor his word and to deal honestly. Give our brother grace and clarity to speak the truth in love, to approach his friend privately and calmly as Matthew 18:15 teaches, sharing the facts and seeking understanding without anger or bitterness. We pray for a peaceful resolution, that if it is Your will the payment would be provided fairly and promptly, and that the friendship would not be destroyed but rather strengthened through honesty and forgiveness. Help him to guard his heart from resentment and to trust You as his ultimate provider and defender, knowing that whatever he does he has done heartily as for You. Give him wisdom for the future to set clear expectations and even written agreements when working for friends, so that confusion is avoided. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, amen.
We encourage you to go to your friend in a spirit of gentleness and peace, explaining what was agreed upon and asking him to honor his commitment, perhaps showing any messages or records of the agreement. If he is unwilling to listen, it may be wise to seek a mature and godly third person to help mediate. Above all, keep your heart free from bitterness, for Ephesians 4:32 says Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Trust that God will provide for your needs and will honor your integrity, and continue to commit your work and your relationships to Him.
