Overwhelmed

Dhitlor

Beloved Servant
Please pray for me. There are many negative things happening in my life and I feel very overwhelmed. I'm also having doubts about whether I should truly be attending the church I'm at for certain reasons. Thank you.

We are lifting you up before the Lord together in this season where you feel overwhelmed by many negative things happening at once, and we thank you for reaching out and sharing your burden with us.

We know what it is to feel weighed down and overwhelmed, and the Word reminds us that God does not want us to carry these burdens alone. We are told in 1 Peter 5:7 to be casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. Jesus himself invites us in Matthew 11:28, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. When our hearts are overwhelmed we can pray as in Psalm 61:2, When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. That rock is Christ, who is steady when everything around us feels unstable.

We also hear your doubts about whether you should continue attending your current church. We want to encourage you gently in this area. Scripture teaches us in Hebrews 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Gathering with other believers is vital for our encouragement, correction, and growth, especially when we feel overwhelmed. At the same time, it is wise and biblical to examine whether a church is faithfully teaching the Word of God, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, and calling people to repentance, holiness, and truth. If there are concerns about doctrine, leadership, or practices that do not align with Scripture, we encourage you to bring those concerns to the Lord first in prayer, to search the Scriptures daily as the Bereans did, and to seek wise, godly counsel. We encourage you in James 1:5, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Ask the Lord for clear wisdom and discernment, and do not make a hasty decision out of discouragement alone. Talk to your pastor if possible, and evaluate everything by the Word.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find true rest and salvation. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved as we read in Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Him, for Romans 10:9 tells us that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is by His name we pray and by His blood we have peace with God.

We want to pray for you now together.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear one who feels overwhelmed by many trials. Lord, You see every burden, every worry, and every doubt about the church and the future. We ask that You would pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus according to Philippians 4:6-7. Teach them to be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving to let their requests be made known to You. Comfort them as only You can, for You are close to the brokenhearted as in Psalm 34:18. Give them rest, strength for each day, and wisdom to know Your will regarding their church home. Lead them to a fellowship where Your Word is faithfully taught and where they can be encouraged and held accountable in love. Help them to keep their eyes on You, the rock that is higher, and to trust that You are working even through these negative circumstances for good. We pray they would draw near to Jesus, know His salvation fully, and find hope and assurance in His name. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to cast your cares on Him daily, to stay in the Word, and to remain connected to other believers even while you seek discernment. God is faithful and He will give you wisdom and peace as you seek Him. We are continuing to pray for you.

We hear how heavy things feel right now with so many negatives piling up at once, and we are really glad you reached out for prayer. Feeling overwhelmed makes everything harder to sort through, including questions about church, and it makes sense you would be wondering where you belong in the midst of it.

When everything feels tangled, it can help to separate what is most pressing from what needs more time and prayer. You might try writing down just the one or two burdens that feel heaviest this week, and separately jotting what specifically is giving you pause about your current church, whether it is teaching, community, or something else that does not sit right. Seeing it on paper can make it less swirling and more prayable.

We would encourage you not to carry these questions alone. Is there a mature believer, pastor, or counselor you trust to talk through both the overwhelm and the church questions with? A calm, outside perspective and prayer together often brings clarity that is hard to find on our own. If the sense of being overwhelmed stays strong or starts affecting sleep, daily life, or health, it is also wise to reach out to your doctor or a counselor alongside prayer.

Father, we lift our friend to You in Jesus name. You see every burden they are carrying and You know their heart about church. Give them rest, clear wisdom, and steady support from people who care. Lead them step by step and remind them they are not alone. Amen.

Your cry of being overwhelmed has been heard, and it is no strange thing that you should feel thus pressed and tried. The Lord often leads His own into the furnace, not to destroy them but to purify them, for His fire is in Zion and His furnace in Jerusalem. The trial as a permanent institution is of much service to the church in promoting her purity, and a similar process goes on in the individual soul. We think ourselves rich and increased in goods till the Lord deals with us by trial, and then we discover how poor we are apart from Him.

You must know that no gold is ever injured in the fire. It is quite one thing to read that truth in comfort, and quite another to read it by the light of the fire itself, yet many a broken heart has had to read it so and has proved it true. God was with Joseph in the house of Potiphar, prospering him, and He was also with him in the dungeon, and that was in some respects the better place, for there he learned more fully that God could be with him in the lowest place. So the Lord can be with you now, though you feel His presence withdrawn and many negative things press upon you. We are not held captive to God by a chain of sweets, nor bribed to love Him, but because He first loved us our hearts rest in Him even when cross providences and strange dealings come from His hand.

Take comfort also in this sure promise, They shall not depart from me. This is not a condition dependent on your own good behavior, but an absolute promise of the omnipotent God who has begun a good work in you and will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The work done in regeneration is not a temporary reformation but an everlasting work by which a man is born for heaven. He who holds you will keep you, and you shall hold on your way by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Concerning your doubts about the church where you attend, hear this counsel. The fear of God is kept alive in our hearts by the hearing of the Word, for faith cometh by hearing, and holy fear cometh through faith. Be diligent, then, in hearing the Word. Ask of any church whether Christ is plainly preached there, whether salvation is declared to be of the Lord alone through faith in His blood, and whether the Word is faithfully opened to feed your soul and keep you in holiness. The church is meant to be salt in the midst of putrefaction and light in the midst of darkness, and you need a place where the gospel is your food and your guard. Do not make a hasty departure, but wait upon the Lord in prayer, search the Scriptures, and seek godly counsel, that you may be found where your soul is most helped to persevere in faith, in repentance, and in prayer under the influence of the grace of God.

I will pray for you that the Lord would give you faith to commit yourself to the stream of eternal grace. May He reveal Christ to you anew, keep your feet from departing, and make this trial to work for your good and His glory. May you be enabled to say with Job, When He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold, and to prove that He who has begun the good work will perfect it.

O Father, help this tried one to trust Thy Son. Thou seest the overwhelming cares and the doubts within. Let Thy Spirit, like a lamp, shed light into the dark heart, revealing Christ so that in His light this soul may see light. Keep this one from departing from Thee, sustain faith, and grant wisdom concerning the place of worship, that Thy name may be glorified and this soul established in holiness to the end. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope, Amen.
