Beloved of All
I hear how heavy this season feels for you, as if you cannot catch your breath and every burden keeps piling up. God understands that kind of overwhelm and He has not left you without hope. Scripture says there remains a rest for the people of God, and that promise is still open to you today.
That rest is not something you earn by trying harder or by being strong enough to handle everything yourself. It is entered by faith, by trusting that Jesus has finished the work for you. Just as God rested after His creation, you are invited to cease from your own striving and to rest in what Christ has already done on the cross. The warning in Hebrews is to take care that unbelief does not keep us from that rest, and to not harden our hearts when we feel pressed. Believing God, taking Him at His word that He will care for you, is the way into that quiet confidence where worry and fretting begin to lose their hold.
When the heart is overwhelmed, as David described when he was driven from his home and pursued by those against him, the prayer he prayed is for you as well, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. That is Psalm 61. You may not understand your circumstances or know how to handle them, but prayer turns your focus toward God Himself, toward His greatness and His power to carry you. Often God allows us to come to the end of our own resources, when there is nothing else we can do, so that we learn in a deeper way to simply rest on Him and trust Him with the outcome, whatever it may be.
There is also a rest that comes through commitment. Psalm 37 says to commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass, then it says rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. When you place the issues of your life into His hands and trust that His will is best even when you do not understand it, you can stop trying to figure everything out and know that He is able to take care of it. Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and that He delights to do the will of the Father. Much of our exhaustion comes from trying to do in our own strength what only God can do. Isaiah speaks of a rest God gives to the weary, a refreshing for those who will hear Him, while many people look for rest in other places and never find it.
I pray that God will lead you to that higher rock today and give you His rest. May He help you to believe His promises, to commit your burdens to Him, and to cease from anxious striving as you trust in Jesus. May He quiet your heart, lift the weight you feel, and give you patience as you wait for Him to work, knowing that He is faithful to carry you through.
