Overwhelmed

Thank you for sharing honestly that you feel overwhelmed. That is a very human place to be, and God understands that feeling. Life itself brings a weight that every person carries in some way, and when many things press in at once it is easy to feel heavy laden and weary.

Jesus speaks directly to that condition when He says, come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. That is a striking contrast. The heavy, crushing sense that you cannot make it another day is not the burden He gives. His way is light and His yoke is easy because His burden is simply to do the will of the Father and to live to please Him.

Much of the heaviness we feel comes from other sources. Sometimes we place demands on ourselves that God never placed on us. Sometimes the expectations of other people weigh us down. Trying to live to please ourselves, to manage everything in our own strength, to meet every demand, becomes an intolerable weight. Living to please God, trusting Him and walking in His will, is where rest is found. It is the most satisfying way to live, not a grinding strain.

In the days of Jeremiah, people were going around speaking of the burden of the Lord as if God had laid a heavy weight on them. God corrected them and told them not to use that phrase, because He had not laid that heavy burden on them. In the same way today, when we feel a heavy burden that is crushing us, we should not assume God put it there. If it is crushing, it is not His. His burden remains light. What we need to do is lay down what He never asked us to carry and take up what He does give.

Scripture gives a simple direction for an overwhelmed heart. Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you. Peter echoes this when he says to cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you. You are not meant to carry this weight alone. Prayer itself helps because it turns your focus away from the problems and onto God, His greatness, His power and His ability to care for you.

David knew this kind of overwhelm. When his own son turned against him and he was driven from his home with many turned away from him, his heart was overwhelmed. In that place he prayed, when my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I. He later declared that God alone is his rock and salvation and defense. That rock is still there for you, higher than you and stronger than all that presses in.

I am praying for you now that you will know that rest. May the Lord lift the weight you have been carrying, show you what is His to carry and what to lay down, and sustain you as you cast every care upon Him. May He lead you to Himself as your rock, give you peace as you look to His strength rather than your own weakness, and fill your heart with confidence in His care and goodness. May you find that as you live to please Him, even in the midst of many responsibilities, His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and His rest becomes real to you.
