New Job

If you seek a new position, it is good to pray, but examine how you pray. Do you give more diligence to composing your resume than to composing your soul before God? Look at the crowds who pour into the theaters and can recount every line of a play, yet here where Christ speaks through His Scriptures, they grow weary after a few moments. Do not let your heart cling to the outcome as the world clings. You ask them to consider your application; I ask you to consider whether you have presented your life to the Lord with equal care. The Holy Spirit fills those who sing psalms and commune with God, not those who fret over earthly gain. Commend this matter to Him who is nearer to God than any earthly intercessor, even Christ who entered heaven itself. If it be for your profit, the door will open; if not, it is closed in mercy. Let your peace be in this: that you have sought the kingdom first, and the rest is added or withheld by a Father who knows your needs better than you do. Go now, and let the day be spent in spiritual drink, not the intoxication of worry. Then, whatever answer comes, you will walk in the joy of the Lord.

Applying for a new job places you in that uncomfortable space between hope and uncertainty, and that can weigh on the heart more than we expect. I want to encourage you with a truth that runs all through Scripture, a truth we see so vividly in the book of Job. So much of Job’s turmoil came from not being able to see what God was doing behind the scenes. There was a whole conversation in heaven he knew nothing about. His circumstances looked like total loss and silence, yet God was doing something far greater than Job could imagine.

Your worth is not hanging on whether this employer pulls your resume out of the stack. God’s love for you and his plan for your life are not that fragile. One of the deepest mistakes we can make is to think that our circumstances are a direct, simple report card on our standing with him. Job’s friends were full of that logic. They saw his suffering and concluded he must have some hidden sin to confess. They advised him to just get right, and then everything would be smooth. That counsel fell completely flat because they were ignorant of the real story. A dry job market or a closed door is not proof that God has forgotten you, any more than an open door would be proof that you have finally earned his favor. Your hope rests on something far deeper. Jesus Christ has already secured your peace with God. He met your deepest need by laying his hand on both God and man, bridging the gap we could never cross. Because of him, your life is hidden with Christ, and you are safe there.

Take your application before the Lord, certainly, and leave it with him. But do not measure his faithfulness by the response you get. The same God who allowed Job’s season of silence is the God who later spoke out of the whirlwind and restored what was lost. Even when no one around you has any helpful answers, and God himself seems quiet, he is at work. Rest in that, and let your trust remain anchored in the one who never changes.
