We have heard your burden for the afflicted in Colombia and our hearts are moved with you before the Lord in this hour of earthquake and great sorrow.

Though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, yet God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. This is the comfort we have, that none of these things, not earthquake, nor famine, nor pestilence, can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The quaking of the globe is terrible to behold, but there may be a heartquake of despair which is more to be dreaded, and we pray that none who have lost house and family and all earthly stay may be buried in despair, but may find hope in Him who alone is our shelter.

He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. There are many broken hearts now, those who mourn their loved ones, those who lie in hospitals, those who sleep upon the ground without home or comfort, those who are cold by night and hungry by day. We very speedily care for bodily diseases, for they urge us to seek the physician, but the Lord sees the deeper wound of the soul. We ask God to have mercy on every family that is suffering, to comfort those who mourn, to heal the injured, to provide daily bread and safe shelter for those sleeping on the ground, and to grant wisdom and strength to all who are bringing help house to house, including the volunteers you mentioned who are buying and distributing supplies directly in the region. We thank God for every act of generosity, whether great or small, and for the desire to see that help reaches those in greatest need, and we pray that He will sustain those who give and those who go.

Scripture reminds us that earthquakes shake what can be shaken, and that fires and disasters can take away earthly possessions even while we are alive. For this reason we are urged not to build upon sand but upon the rock, which is Christ. What is built on Him remains firm when all else is shaken. In the night when Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises in prison, God sent an earthquake that opened doors and loosed chains, not to let them flee but to awaken the keeper of the prison to salvation. At the resurrection also the earth shook and an angel rolled away the stone, showing that God brings life and hope where there seemed to be only death and darkness. So we pray that even in this shaking, many hearts in Colombia would be awakened, that doors of help would be opened, and that the hope of the resurrection would be made known.

Thank you for bringing this heavy burden before the Lord and for your compassionate heart toward those who are suffering after this devastating earthquake. The loss you describe is overwhelming, homes destroyed, families torn apart, loved ones hospitalized and in need of medication, so many now in emergency shelters without basic supplies, food, water, clothing and a place to sleep. It is right to pray for them and to seek practical ways to help.

A major earthquake has a way of revealing how helpless we truly are. The ground that seemed so solid begins to sway and shake, and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Scripture speaks of this. In Revelation we read of a great earthquake such as has not been since people were on the earth, so mighty and so great, when the cities of the nations will fall. Isaiah also describes fear and the pit and the trap coming upon the inhabitants of the earth. These tremors we experience now, as terrible as they are, are localized and limited, yet they remind us that a far greater shaking is coming, and the Lord has said that He will once again shake the earth so that only what cannot be shaken will remain. That unshakable foundation is found in Christ alone.

In the midst of such grief it helps to remember what is written in Lamentations, that though the Lord causes grief, yet He will have compassion according to the multitude of His mercies, for He does not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. He sees every family that has lost a home, every person waiting in a hospital, every child who needs care, and His heart is moved with compassion. He is near to those who are brokenhearted and He has not forgotten them in their distress.

It is also encouraging to see how God has made provision for mercy even under the law. There was a law for the leper in the day of his cleansing, a way for one who was considered incurable to be examined, restored and brought back into community. That shows that God always leaves room to work, to heal and to restore when we might think there is no hope. In the same way, when the people of Israel were bitten in the wilderness, God provided a way of life simply by looking in faith at what He had lifted up. That provision points us to Jesus, who was lifted up for us. Whoever looks to Him in faith and trusts Him for forgiveness will live. The greatest need for every survivor, for every grieving family, and for each of us, is to receive the provision God has made for salvation through Jesus Christ. That is where true and lasting peace is found, even when everything around us has been shaken.

Your desire to give and to help provide water, food, mattresses and sleeping mats for those sleeping on the ground, warm clothing and blankets for the cold nights, hygiene items and medicine for children, the sick and the elderly, is a tangible expression of the love of Christ. Buying supplies near the affected area and delivering them personally house to house, even to the most remote homes, is a direct and effective way to meet urgent needs. That kind of personal, accountable care, where what is given goes directly to those who need it most and where those helping know each family and where the need is greatest, honors the Lord and truly helps people. Every gift, whether small or large, matters, and even when someone cannot give financially, praying, sharing the need with others, and offering emotional and spiritual support is a real help.

We join you in prayer for these dear people.
