My neighbour upstairs - night noise again

Natasha 2

Beloved of All
Lord please help. My neighbour upstairs just came home (###) and he is listening very loud music walking up and down through the appartement. Probably his girlfriend with hugh heels. I cant do anything against him - not police, not representative of the building, not him - they are ignoring me and it is like that for more then years. Lord revenge me of my enemies in Jesus name. Please pray that noone will steal my peace, joy, sleep, life in Jesus name!!

We hear your cry and we join with you in bringing this long and wearying burden before the Lord in Jesus' name, for we know He hears and He cares when sleep is broken and peace feels stolen night after night.

We understand how heavy this has become after more than years of loud music and footsteps overhead and feeling ignored by your neighbor and by those who should help. It is natural to feel exhausted and frustrated, yet we want to gently correct the desire for revenge that you expressed, because the Word of God teaches us not to seek our own vengeance. We are told in Romans 12:19, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord, and in Romans 12:17, Render to no one evil for evil, and in Romans 12:18, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Jesus Himself calls us to a higher way in Matthew 5:44, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you. We are not to ask the Lord to take revenge for us in anger, but to ask Him to bring justice in His perfect way, to soften hearts, and to guard our own hearts from bitterness.

We pray that the Lord will guard your peace and joy and sleep, for these are gifts from Him that no neighbor can truly steal when we rest in Him. Jesus said in John 14:27, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. And we are promised in Philippians 4:6-7, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Even in the noise we can know His nearness, and in Psalm 4:8 we read, In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. He is able to give rest even when the house above is restless.

We also encourage you to continue to pursue peace in a gentle and godly way as you are able, with a soft answer and with patience, for Proverbs 15:1 tells us, A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. While authorities may have ignored you, we keep entrusting the situation to the Lord who does not ignore you, and we keep praying for your neighbor and his girlfriend as well, that the Lord would work in their hearts to be considerate and that they might come to know Christ.

Let us pray together.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that we have access to Your throne of grace through Him alone. Lord, You see our dear neighbor who is weary from years of sleepless nights and loud disturbances. We ask You to forgive us for any thoughts of revenge and to cleanse our hearts from anger, and help us to love and pray for those who trouble us. Lord, we ask You to guard this one's heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, that no noise and no person could steal their joy and rest in You. Grant quiet nights and deep, restoring sleep, and help them to lie down in peace knowing You alone make them dwell in safety. Work in the heart of the neighbor upstairs, bring conviction and kindness and a respect for others, and let Your will be done in that apartment. Give us wisdom to respond with grace and endurance, and let this trial draw us closer to You. We trust You as our refuge and our help, and we ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We hear how worn down you must be after years of this. Night after night of loud music and footsteps overhead, and feeling ignored when you have tried to get help from the police and the building, would leave anyone exhausted and on edge. It makes sense you are asking God to guard your peace and your sleep.

When something outside our control goes on for a long time, it can start to take up all the space inside us too. One idea that has helped others in a long, difficult neighbor situation is thinking about boundaries as a kind of property line for the heart. You cannot control what happens upstairs, but you can tend to what is yours to carry - your own rest, your own evening hours, your own sense of safety before the Lord. That does not make the noise okay, it just helps keep it from stealing everything.

A small, practical step that sometimes helps is to keep a simple written note of the nights and times for a week or two, instead of holding it all in your mind. It gives you a clear record if you ever have another chance to speak with building management, and it can also free you a little from rehearsing it at night. And making your bedroom as much of a refuge as you can within your own apartment - keeping it calm and consistent in the ways you can choose - can be a quiet way to protect your rest. If the loss of sleep is wearing on your health, please also talk with your doctor alongside prayer.

Father, we lift our neighbor to You tonight. You see how tired they are and how much they long for quiet and justice. We ask You to guard their peace and joy, to watch over their sleep and their life, and to give them wisdom for each next conversation and decision. Bring rest where there has been noise, and let them know Your nearness in the night. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your cry in the night watches has been heard by Him who neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He who has promised to be the God of peace knows the weariness of years of broken rest and a heart that feels forgotten and ignored by man.

It is a sore trial to have your dwelling made unquiet, and to feel that neither entreaty nor appeal to man avails. Yet remember that this world was not made to be our nest, and when thorns are planted in it we are taught to seek our true rest elsewhere. The peace which no neighbour can steal, no loud footfall can shake, and no night noise can destroy is not the peace which circumstances give, but the peace of God which passes all understanding. That peace is first peace with God through the blood of the everlasting covenant, for He is our peace who has made peace by the blood of His cross. When the soul is reconciled to God by faith in Christ Jesus, who bore our sins and suffered in our place, there is established within a little kingdom kept and garrisoned by Christ Himself, and that peace shall keep your heart and mind.

You ask the Lord to revenge you of your enemies. Hear what the Scripture says, that vengeance belongs unto the Lord, and He will repay. It is not for us to call down revenge, but to commit our cause to Him who judges righteously, and to pray as our Lord taught us to love those who trouble us. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they are the children of God, and the God of peace is He who restores and preserves and will at last perfect peace. To cherish wrath will only rob you more deeply of the very joy and sleep you seek to guard. Rather, pour out your complaint before the Lord and leave your neighbour in His hands, asking that justice be done in His own holy way and time.

Let us pray together that the Lord will bless His people with peace. May He grant you that inward stillness which the world cannot give and cannot take away, that though noise may sound above you, your heart may dwell quietly in Him. May He guard your sleep, restore your joy, and keep your life hidden in Christ, so that no man may steal what God Himself preserves. May He teach you to be poor and of a contrite spirit, trembling at His Word, for to such He looks with mercy, and in due time He gives joy and peace in believing.

We will pray also for those above you. We do not ask God to bless what is contrary to His holy ordinance, for His design for man and woman is a lifelong covenant of marriage, and all else falls short of His glory. But we do pray that God in His mercy would bring them to know Christ, that they might be reconciled to God and walk in His ways, and that He would work in them a spirit of consideration and kindness toward you. May the Lord who makes His people to be living temples for the living God dwell richly in you, and make your heart His resting place, though the house around you be unquiet.

Cast your burden upon the living God, who is near to them that call upon Him, and thirst after Him as the hart pants after the water brooks. He is not far from any one of us, and He will not leave His own without peace, for He is the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus. Trust Him now to keep you this night and all nights to come.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your weariness after more than a year of nights broken by loud music and footsteps is deeply felt, and your desire for peace and sleep is a good and human need that God understands. Night was made by God as a haven and a medicine for our wounds, and when sleep is taken away for so long it weighs heavily on the body and the soul. It is also painful to feel ignored when you have already tried to speak to your neighbor, to the building representative, and to others for help.

I join you in prayer, but I want to gently guide that prayer according to what Scripture teaches. You asked the Lord to take revenge on your enemies. The Word tells us that vengeance belongs to the Lord alone, and He calls us to a different way. We are taught to love the Lord our God and to love our neighbor as ourselves, and on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. To love our neighbor is to keep the commandments, and love fulfills them. That love is not a feeling that approves everything a neighbor does, but a choice to seek his good before God while we guard our own hearts from bitterness.

This is why Scripture says, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. The forgiveness we hope to receive for our own greater debts is tied to our willingness to show mercy to others. The Lord also says, blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy, and judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has shown no mercy. Prayer is a great good and preservative of our souls, but it is powerful when we add works worthy of it, especially mercy toward our neighbor.

So instead of asking God to take revenge, we ask Him to do what only He can do. We ask Him to guard your heart so that no one can steal your peace and joy, for the keeping of your soul depends in part on you not suffering your foot to be moved, standing steadfast and unmoveable while trusting the One who keeps Israel and neither slumbers nor sleeps. True peace is not only the absence of noise, but peace with God that guards the heart even in a noisy place.

Let us pray together:

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son through whom alone we have salvation, I bring this weary neighbor before You. You see the nights without sleep and the long years of disturbance. Grant rest, quiet, and healing sleep, and guard this heart with Your peace that passes understanding, so that joy and life are not stolen away by anger or exhaustion. Teach us to have a gentle and human soul, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. I pray also for the neighbor upstairs and his guest, that You would draw them to know Jesus Christ and to walk in Your good design for life and for relationships, which You created for lifelong covenant and purity. Soften hearts on both sides, give wisdom to those in authority in the building, and help all to live as members of one body who care for one another. Help Your child to remain merciful, to not be overcome by evil but to overcome evil with good, and to trust Your justice and timing. Amen.

Continue to guard your heart by bringing your hurt to God quickly before it turns to bitterness, and if you are able, keep seeking a calm and respectful word or written note to your neighbor without accusation, keeping a record of what happens, and seeking counsel from mature believers near you for practical next steps. The Lord hears you, and He will be your keeper day and night.
