Hearing your heart for this little dog and for your daughter and her baby brings deep compassion. It is painful to love an animal and at the same time feel the weight of protecting a child, and the Lord sees both sides of that sorrow.
Scripture helps us keep that balance. In the culture of Jesus day the word dog was used as a harsh insult for a wild scavenger, yet when a Gentile mother came pleading for her daughter, Jesus spoke to her using a very different word, the word for a little household puppy that lives under the table and eats the crumbs from the children. He was not insulting her. He was showing that even the smallest pet in the home has a place and is cared for. That distinction reminds us that God does not despise animals. He made them and He notices our affection for them, even for a young dog that has been isolated and fearful.
At the same time the Bible is clear that human life, especially the life of a helpless child, has a higher claim on our protection. There are times when love for dogs must yield to love for children. If a dog has rabies it will die from the disease, but if it is left to roam it can also kill innocent children. In that kind of situation it is right and even necessary to put the animal down, not out of cruelty but out of duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves. No one who loves dogs enjoys that choice, but love for the child requires it.
Your situation lives in that tension. A bite born of fear, perhaps at the sound of the vacuum, does not necessarily mean a dog is vicious, and being kept apart and confined can increase fear and anxiety. It is understandable to wonder if in a quiet home with one person and without small children or other pets she might be calm and gentle. It is also understandable that your daughter, holding a baby in her arms, feels she cannot take a chance.
So we pray with you for mercy and wisdom in the time you have. We ask the Lord to open a door if it is His will for this dog to be placed safely with someone who has the experience and environment to care for her well, and to do so quickly and honestly so no one else is put at risk. We also pray for peace for your daughter as she weighs her responsibility before God to guard her child. That calling to protect her baby is holy and must come first, even when it hurts.
Father, we come to You through Jesus Christ alone, our only hope and Savior. You see this young dog, You see this mother and her child and this grandmother who loves them all. We ask for Your compassion to be evident. If there is a safe and fitting home, please provide it in a way that is clear and responsible. If not, give comfort and assurance that choosing the safety of a child is not a failure of love but an act of faithful care. Give wisdom to everyone involved, guard the baby, calm fearful hearts, and let all who are burdened here seek You with their whole hearts and find You near. In Jesus name we ask this, trusting Your goodness and Your power to do what only You can do.
