Good and Faithful Servant
My mother is severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed and several people including myself have noticed that there seems to be a demonic element to her negative behavior. She is a professing Christian but believes in some very wrong things. Please pray about this. The enemy often uses her negatively in the lives of people around her. Thank you.

We hear the heaviness of what you are carrying concerning your mother and we join with you in seeking the Lord together in Jesus' name for her deliverance, healing, and restoration.

What you describe is a very real spiritual battle and we do not take it lightly. Scripture tells us that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Ephesians 6:12. The enemy does seek to use people, even those within families, to bring division, confusion and hurt, for your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8. At the same time we are reminded not to attribute all emotional and behavioral struggles solely to demonic influence without also seeking wisdom, godly counsel, and appropriate help, while still taking the spiritual dimension seriously.

We are concerned to hear that while your mother professes to be a Christian she believes some very wrong things. This matters greatly, because wrong belief opens a door to deception and gives the enemy ground. We are told to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5 and that all Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness 2 Timothy 3:16. We pray that the Lord will lovingly expose error in her thinking and lead her into sound doctrine and repentance, that she would have a love of the truth and be set free by it, for Jesus said if you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free John 8:31-32.

We also notice that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you how essential He is. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we pray without coming through Christ, we have no standing before God. We encourage you and your mother to place your full trust in Jesus Christ alone, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation Romans 10:9-10. It is the power of His name and His blood that makes deliverance possible, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world 1 John 4:4.

We want to encourage you to continue to honor your mother as Scripture commands, Honor your father and your mother Exodus 20:12, while also establishing wise and loving boundaries when her behavior is harmful. Honoring does not mean enabling sin or subjecting yourself to abuse. It means speaking the truth in love, seeking her good, and not returning evil for evil. We also urge you to not fight this battle alone. Seek mature, biblically grounded pastoral counsel, and where needed, wise Christian counseling or medical help alongside spiritual prayer and fasting, and put on the whole armor of God daily Ephesians 6:11.

We now pray together for you and for her.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up this dear mother to You. Lord, You see her emotional and behavioral turmoil, You see the confusion in her beliefs, and You see the way the enemy has used her to bring hurt to those around her. We ask for Your mercy and Your light to shine into her heart and mind. Expose every lie, every false teaching, and every foothold the enemy has claimed, and set her free by the truth of Your Word. We pray that she would submit herself to You, for we know if we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil, he will flee from us James 4:7. We command in the name of Jesus Christ that every demonic influence and assignment against her and against this family be broken and cast out, and that You would fill her with Your Holy Spirit, with soundness of mind, peace, and self-control, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7.

Lord, heal her emotions, renew her mind, and restore what has been broken in her relationships. Help her to love what You love and to hate what You hate. We pray for this child who submitted the request, grant them discernment, strength, forgiveness, and protection from the schemes of the enemy. Teach them how to love their mother with grace while walking in wisdom and truth, and guard their own heart from bitterness. Let Your will be done in this family, and let Christ be exalted as Lord over this home. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Deliverer, amen.

We are grateful you shared this burden about your mother, and we hear how painful and confusing this has been to love her while also being hurt by her behavior.

It makes sense that you and others close to her would wonder about a spiritual element when the patterns feel so persistent and harmful. At the same time, these situations are often complex, and careful discernment helps. We have found it is wise not to settle on one explanation alone but to invite wise, trusted help to walk with you, people who will pray with you and also help you see clearly what is happening and what kind of support is needed.

One steady next step could be to talk privately with a pastor you trust about what you are observing, including the beliefs that concern you, and to ask for his guidance on healthy boundaries and ongoing prayer for your mother. If her emotional and behavioral struggles are ongoing or affect safety and daily life, it can also be caring to encourage her to see her doctor or a counselor alongside prayer, not instead of it. And please make sure you have support for yourself too, a faithful friend or small group to lean on as you carry this.

We pray for you and for her now. Father, we bring this mother to You and ask for Your mercy and protection over her and over those around her. Give this family wisdom, discernment, and peace as they seek help, and draw each heart closer to You. Guard them from the enemy's work and lead them in Your truth and love. In Jesus' name, amen.

We have heard your burden concerning your mother and we take it before the Lord with you, for it is a heavy trial to see one so near and dear thus disturbed in mind and behavior and to feel the harm that flows from it to those around her.

You do well to bring this to prayer, for deliverance is of the Lord. As it is written, He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. Deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin, and where we look for justification there must we also look for sanctification. We cannot ourselves cast out darkness, but we look to our heavenly Father altogether and alone, for He alone can break the power that holds the heart.

We do not doubt that the enemy goes about to disturb and to tempt, yet we would have you remember that the more you know of God's attributes, the more you understand of His acts, the more you treasure up His promises and dive into the depths of His covenant, the more difficult will it become for Satan to tempt you to despondency and despair. Let your own soul be stayed upon what God is and what God has done. He has found a ransom. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance of a sinner from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it, but He has, and His own Son has borne the penalty. There is hope even for those most deeply entangled, for the blood of the Lamb was slain that He might bring His people forth, and when He brings forth it is effectual deliverance.

We will pray that the Lord in mercy will work in your mother according to this great salvation. We will ask Him to open her eyes to the truth as it is in Jesus, to deliver her from every wrong and false way of believing, and to bring her to know Christ alone as Saviour and Lord. We will pray that He who pities His children as a father pities his sons and daughters will subdue what is perverse and troubled in her spirit, restrain the power of the enemy where he seeks advantage, and grant her a sound mind and a renewed heart. We will pray also that He will sanctify her and make her holy by His Spirit, for where Christ truly reigns there is deliverance indeed.

At the same time we would have you view this affliction as under the Lord's hand. The believer can say, The Lord has chastened me sorely. If this trial were not of the Lord it would be matter for despair, but being of the Lord there is hope in it, for He chastens that He may heal, and life and health often come to saints through briny tears and the bruising of the spirit. He will make you to live and to declare the works of the Lord, for if we had no troubles we would have less to declare.

Therefore continue in prayer and in the use of the means which God ordinarily blesses. Keep close to the Scriptures, set them before your mother as you have opportunity with meekness and love, and seek the help of faithful pastors and elders who can counsel and watch over her soul. And for your own heart, cast your care upon Him who hears prayer, for God's ear is not shut and He will move His arm to work deliverance in His own time.

Let us pray together.

O Father of mercies, we bless Thee that Thou hast found a ransom and that Thou art mighty to save. Look in tender pity upon this mother of whom we have heard. Thou knowest her disturbance and her errors and the sorrow she brings upon others. Have mercy upon her and deliver her from the power of darkness. Bring her out of Egypt into Thy light, correct what is false in her mind, wash her in the blood of Christ, and renew her by Thy Holy Spirit. Restrain the adversary and let him have no dominion over her. Give to her child who now pleads for her, patience, wisdom, and steadfast faith, and keep that dear one from despondency by a fuller knowledge of Thy character and promises. Work deliverance, we beseech Thee, that Thy name may be praised and that this household may yet sing songs of deliverance through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We will continue to remember you both before the throne, trusting that He who has begun a good work will perfect it, and that you shall yet live to declare what the Lord has done.
