Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You see what is happening, and you turn to prayer. That is right. Prayer is our great weapon; we need it early, we need it by night. The day is full of rocks and storms, and without prayer the boat is quickly sunk. But do not think the work of prayer is to ask God to do what you will not do yourself. If we sleep, the help of others profits nothing. You ask to learn not to misplace things. God will teach you, but you must be on the alert. When you finish with an item, do not set it down anywhere your hand happens to fall. Give every common thing a home, and return it there at once. This small discipline of the hands is a guarding of the eyes and the mind. The star did not remain fixed while the Magi wandered; it reappeared to guide them when they moved. So also the order you seek will be given as you move in obedience.
For your mother’s supplies, I say to you what the Scripture shows: thanksgiving has great power. Before you see the answer, even before you make the call, lift up thanksgiving as Christ did at the tomb. He did not wait for Lazarus to come forth; He said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” Why? Because He knew that the Father’s will and His own were one, and He wished to teach us that we can speak with confidence when we entreat according to God’s will. It is no small thing to ask for a mother’s urgent need. Therefore, pray with thanksgiving that the supplies come swiftly. The prayer does not rest on your own worthiness; it rests on the mercy of the One who says, “I will defend this city for My servant’s sake.” Put your trust there, and let your heart be quiet. God is not slow to hear when faith and thanksgiving are the sweet savor rising from the altar.
