mental and body problems

Your words have been heard and your suffering has been brought before the Lord with deep care. You have described hearing voices, a racing heart, pain in your stomach and bowels, inability to eat, sleepless nights and a feeling of overheating in the body, loss of energy and trouble with your sight, and turning to drugs when the burden feels too heavy. God sees all of this. He hears your groaning, and He has not turned away from you.

Scripture teaches that affliction is not a sign that God has forsaken you. For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and every son whom He receives He corrects. The way that leads to life is narrow, and all who enter life pass through trial. This does not mean God delights in your pain, but that He can use even this hard season to train you, to show His power, and to prepare a greater reward. To bear affliction patiently and meekly is itself a great offering before Him, and it will not be forgotten.

Yet affliction does not have to consume your heart. The same affliction that weighs on the body can be accompanied by the joy of the Holy Spirit. As the three children in the furnace were refreshed with dew though surrounded by fire, so God can bedew the soul even in the furnace of temptation and give rest within. The pain is real in the body, but the Spirit can keep the heart from being destroyed by it and bring a peace that does not come from circumstances.

Bring all of this to Jesus directly and persistently, even when it feels He is silent. Remember the woman who came weeping for her daughter and was not answered at first, yet kept entreating for mercy until the Lord answered. Remember the woman who only touched the hem of His garment in faith and was healed, and the centurion who said, speak the word only, trusting that Christ could heal at a distance. You do not need perfect words. Come humbly, tell Him your affliction plainly, and ask for mercy. He is able to heal with a word, and He hears even the faintest cry for help.

I urge you also, because your body is precious to God, to turn away from drug use. I understand you have resorted to it because the distress feels unbearable, but it harms both body and mind and brings no true relief or healing. Ask the Lord to deliver you from this and to give you strength to seek help. Do not walk through this alone. Please seek medical care promptly for your heart, stomach, sleep, sight and mental distress, and speak honestly with a doctor, a counselor and a trusted pastor or mature believer who can walk with you regularly. If voices urge you to harm yourself or others, or if you feel unsafe, seek help immediately from a trusted person or emergency care in your area. You need both spiritual and practical support, and God often provides healing through the hands of others.

I pray for you now.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on this your child who is suffering in mind and body. You alone are Savior and Healer. Hear this cry and draw near. Calm the racing heart, quiet the voices and troubled thoughts, and grant peace to the mind. Touch the stomach, intestines and bowels and restore the ability to eat and digest without pain. Take away the sleeplessness and the distressing heat in the body and grant deep and restful sleep. Restore energy and clear sight. Break the hold of drugs and give strength to turn from them and to seek help that truly heals. Fill this heart with the joy and refreshment of Your Holy Spirit even in the midst of affliction, and let this trial become a path to knowing Your comfort and power more deeply. Lead to faithful doctors and counselors and to believers who will support and pray continually. Keep this dear one from despair and hold fast in hope. In Your holy name I ask this, Amen.

Keep calling upon the Lord each day, even with short prayers. Stay connected to His word, to His people, and to the help that is available to you. God has not abandoned you in this affliction, and He is able to bring you through it to healing and to peace.

Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you are carrying. Hearing voices every day, a racing heart, inability to eat or sleep, problems with your stomach and bowels, feeling overheated, loss of energy and blurred vision, and turning to drugs to cope is a heavy burden, and it is right to reach out for prayer and for help.

I want to pray for you and also to point you to what Scripture shows about healing and hope. The gospel of Matthew, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, quotes Isaiah and says of Jesus that He bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses. That prophecy is shown as fulfilled when Jesus healed the leper, the centurion's servant, Peter's mother in law, and the multitudes who were brought to Him in the evening, including those troubled spiritually. Matthew understands the suffering of Christ to include both spiritual and physical healing. When Jesus broke bread and said this is my body which is broken for you, do this in remembrance of me, He was pointing to that same provision.

At the same time Scripture keeps us from presuming that God will remove every affliction instantly in this life. Paul prayed three times for the thorn in the flesh, described as a messenger of Satan to buffet him, and the Lord did not remove it but answered with grace and strength in weakness. There are things about healing we do not fully understand, including why some are healed quickly and others are not, and why some healings are gradual. In fact the Gospels record one healing that happened in stages, which reminds us that God often heals gradually.

All healing is from God, whether it comes in a moment or through a process. He created our bodies and He created the processes by which bodies mend, so a gradual recovery through proper care is no less divine than an instant touch. He is able to heal the physical, the emotional and the spiritual, and He has authority over the physical realm, the material world, and the spiritual realm. He never used His miraculous power to serve Himself, but He freely used it to serve the needs of others, and He still cares about your physical needs today. There is much phoniness that has been done in the name of healing, but that does not mean God has stopped caring or stopped healing.

Scripture also shows a connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body. John wrote to Gaius that he wished above all things that he would prosper and be in health even as his soul prospered. That is not a blanket promise that every believer will be perfectly healthy, but it does express a real relationship. Proverbs says a merry heart does good like a medicine, and we now know scientifically how closely mental and emotional wellbeing and physical health are tied together. Caring for your soul before the Lord, and caring for your body with wise help, go together.

What does this mean for you right now.

Jesus offers Himself to you first as Savior, and then as Healer and Provider and Righteousness according to your need. Whatever your need, He becomes the answer as you trust Him. Come to Him for forgiveness and new life through faith in Him alone, and keep coming to Him daily for mercy and strength.

Please also seek medical help promptly. A racing heart, inability to eat, bowel problems, sleeplessness, feeling overheated, loss of energy, trouble seeing, and hearing voices are serious symptoms that need evaluation by a doctor and by trusted mental health professionals. God often brings healing through doctors, counselors, and others in the body of Christ, for the body has many members and not everyone has the same gift. You do not have to face this alone. If you are using drugs to cope, please tell a doctor or a trusted pastor or counselor right away and ask for help to turn from that path, because it will harm your body and mind further and will not bring the relief you are seeking. If you ever feel unsafe or feel you might harm yourself, please reach out immediately to a trusted person, a local emergency service, or a crisis helpline in your area.

For sleep and anxiety and stomach distress, simple steady steps can help alongside medical care, such as a regular sleep pattern, avoiding stimulants and drugs and alcohol, gentle nutrition as advised by a clinician, prayer and Scripture before rest, and inviting a mature believer to pray with you and check on you.

I am praying for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus, I bring this dear one before You. You see the voices and confusion, the racing heart, the pain in stomach and bowels, the inability to eat and sleep, the heat and exhaustion and blurred vision, and the pull toward drugs. Lord Jesus, You bore our infirmities and carried our sicknesses, and You have authority over body and spirit. Have mercy and bring healing according to Your perfect will, whether in a moment or through a gradual process. Bring peace to the mind, calm to the heart, rest in the night, strength to the body, clarity to sight, and freedom from every oppressive voice. Forgive sin, break the power of drug dependence, and fill this life with Your presence and hope. Guide this person to safe, skilled help and to caring believers who will walk alongside. Give wisdom to doctors and counselors, and let soul and body be renewed as they prosper in You. Amen.

Please do not stay isolated. Reach out today to a doctor, a counselor, and a Bible believing pastor who can know you, pray with you, and help you take next steps. Keep seeking the Lord in His Word, especially the Psalms and the Gospels, and keep asking Him for help. He hears, He cares, and He is able.
