We are so encouraged that you shared Matthew 6:33 with us, for this is a precious promise from our Lord Jesus Himself and it is at the very heart of what it means to walk with Him.

In context Jesus had been teaching His disciples not to be anxious about what we will eat or drink or wear, for our heavenly Father knows we need these things. He says in Matthew 6:31-33, Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, What will we eat? What will we drink? With what will we be clothed? For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. And again in Matthew 6:34, Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

To seek first His Kingdom means to put God’s rule and reign, His will and His glory, above every other pursuit, ambition, worry, or desire in our lives. To seek His righteousness means to hunger for His holiness, to be clothed in the righteousness that comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, and to live in obedience to His Word. We are reminded in Jeremiah 29:13, You will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart, and in Psalm 37:4, Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. When we delight in Him first, He faithfully aligns our desires with His and provides for our needs according to His perfect wisdom.

We notice your request shared this beautiful verse but did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we can seek the Kingdom at all and have access to the Father. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are made righteous and welcomed into His Kingdom. As it says in Romans 10:9, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

We join together with you in prayer.

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Kingdom and Your righteousness and for the promise that when we seek You first, You will care for all that concerns us. Forgive us for the times we have put our worries, our plans, or our own desires before You. Help our dear friend who shared this verse to seek You with all their heart, to abide in Christ daily through prayer and Your Word, and to trust You more deeply. Fill them with Your peace that surpasses understanding as described in Philippians 4:6-7, and teach them not to be anxious but to bring everything to You in prayer. Draw them ever closer to Jesus, that they may know Him as Savior and Lord and find their greatest joy in Him. We ask that You would provide for every need according to Your riches in glory and that their life would bear fruit for Your Kingdom. We pray all these things in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Thank you for sharing this verse with us. We can hear a sincere desire in it to put God at the center, and we are grateful you brought it here.

Wanting to seek His kingdom first in the middle of everyday pressures is not always simple. Worries about provision, work, family, and the future can quickly move to the front of our minds. That desire you expressed is less about getting everything right at once and more about a quiet, daily turning toward Him, trusting that He is both near to us in our struggles and able to guide us as circumstances change.

A small step that may help this week is to set aside a few unhurried minutes at the start of the day, before other demands begin, to name before the Lord what is weighing on you most and ask Him to shape how you approach it. It can also steady you to share this commitment with a trusted pastor or friend who can pray with you and check in.

Father, we thank You for the heart that wants to seek You first. We ask You to draw close, give clear wisdom for each decision, and bring Your peace into the concerns that feel heavy right now. Help us to walk faithfully with You day by day, resting in Your presence and care. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is no richer promise set before the seeking soul than this word upon which your heart has laid hold. To seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness is to make it the lodestar of your life, and to find that all else shall be added as the Lord sees needful.

Take heed how you understand this righteousness. It is not a righteousness of your own, for self righteousness is the natural religion of every fallen heart, and all that a self righteous man pleads for is but a partial and comparative righteousness which must condemn him. A perfect righteousness you must have, or else you shall never be admitted to the wedding feast, and where shall you get that spotless robe. You have no righteousness in and of yourself, nor has any child of God any of his own. That righteousness is to be found only in Christ. He is the Lord our Righteousness, and when you put on His robe by faith, faith is imputed for righteousness to him who believes in the Son of God. I count all my own righteousness as dung, that I may win Christ and be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ.

To seek the kingdom, then, is to seek the Lord Himself honestly and with your whole heart. When a man lives as he should, his whole life is seeking the Lord. He begins by being conscious of his sin and seeking pardon, aware of his danger and seeking salvation in the Lord, and then he seeks the Lord by daily and constant prayer, that he may be upheld and guided and constrained in paths of righteousness and restrained from the ways of sin. He becomes a seeker after sanctification as once he was after justification. Seek Him honestly, not with a sinister and selfish motive, not seeking His gifts while your heart is elsewhere, but seeking first His rule and His glory.

And this seeking is not a laboring for salvation by your own works, which would be looking for substance among dreams. It is a coming to Christ by thinking of Him, trusting Him and loving Him. The sum and substance of your confidence must not be that you are trusting in yourself, nor in a vague notion of mercy apart from the blood, but that you are trusting in the blood of Jesus Christ and wrapped about with His perfect righteousness. He is the Sun of Righteousness, and to adore any lesser light is vanity, but to worship Him is life. Walk out into the beams which come from that Sun. Stand in the light of God's reconciled countenance.

Therefore I would give you this word of advice, drive out all unbelief. Are you trusting, dear heart, are you trusting. If it be but a feeble trust, yet if you are trusting you are blessed, and God pronounces you so. Do not let faith waver, nor suffer the tempter to tell you that you are accursed. Give up your own ideas of how to get peace, take God's method of salvation, and lay hold on eternal life by trusting in the slain Savior. Seek you first the kingdom of God and His righteousness in your own life, and seek to promote that righteousness everywhere, taking the side of righteousness in all things, and you shall find that when a man lives for God and for eternal life, he will get all the things he needs without seeking for them.

May the Lord grant you grace to seek Him while He may be found, to trust wholly in Christ and to be clothed in His righteousness, and may He in His wisdom add unto you all that is needful for your pilgrimage, to the praise of His grace.
