We hear the deep pain and hope in your heart for your marriage and your family, and we stand with you in prayer for restoration. We thank God that you have taken up Christ seriously and declare there is no turning back, for this is the only foundation on which true healing can be built. We believe with you that marriage is sacred, a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman joined together by God, and that what God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:6 and Mark 10:9. The Lord says He hates divorce, Malachi 2:16, not because He wants people trapped in hurt, but because He knows the pain it brings and He desires reconciliation, forgiveness and holiness within the covenant.
We want to speak with love and truth about the hurts you have shared. For a long time you resented your husband, and we understand how years of pain can harden the heart. Yet we are called to forgive as God forgave us, Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13, not because the hurt was small, but because Christ has forgiven us so greatly. Your willingness to let go of resentment and to grow in God rather than simply waiting where you were left is a beautiful sign of the new creation you are in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and of being transformed by the renewing of your mind, Romans 12:2. Continue to press into Jesus, into His Word, into prayer and into fellowship with mature believers who will point you to truth.
We must also address with loving firmness the sin that has wounded your home. Alcoholism and the use of poppy and other substances, and any form of domestic violence, are not of God. The Scriptures warn us not to be drunken with wine, Ephesians 5:18, and that drunkenness and such works of the flesh keep us from inheriting the kingdom of God, Galatians 5:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 6:10. Husbands are commanded to love their wives even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, Ephesians 5:25, and to not be bitter against them, Colossians 3:19, which leaves no room for violence or abuse. We pray your husband comes to true repentance, which bears fruit worthy of repentance, Matthew 3:8, and that he will confess his sins and find forgiveness and cleansing, 1 John 1:9. Sobriety and gentleness and self control are fruit of the Spirit, Galatians 5:22-23, and we pray he will walk in that freedom.
We are concerned that in his court ordered rehab and classes he is being told you are not good together and should divorce. That counsel does not align with the Word of God, which says to the married, a wife should not depart from her husband and a husband should not send away his wife, 1 Corinthians 7:10-11. While separation for safety and for time to pursue real repentance and healing can at times be necessary, especially where there has been violence and addiction and where five precious children are in the home, we do not endorse divorce as the solution. We encourage you both to seek godly, biblical counsel from a pastor or mature believers who honor marriage, and for you to maintain wise boundaries that protect you and your children while you pray for his complete deliverance and transformation. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalm 34:18, and He promises to restore the years that the swarming locust has eaten, Joel 2:25, when hearts turn fully to Him.
We join you in rebuking the evil spirits that have flooded this marriage and we speak the name of Jesus over every voice and influence that is against what God has joined together. We pray that the Lord will block your husband's ears and eyes from the schemes of the enemy and open them to the truth of Christ, that he will see your faithful, patient and honest growth in God and be drawn to meet you in that journey.
We pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name by which we are saved and have access to Your throne, Acts 4:12 and John 14:6. We lift this marriage and this family to You. Lord, You see the years of hurt on both sides, the resentment, the bondage to alcohol and drugs, the anger that led to violence, and the pain carried by five children. We ask for Your mercy and forgiveness for all sin, and we thank You that our sister has turned to You with her whole heart. Keep her rooted and growing in You, give her wisdom, strength, peace and discernment each day, James 1:5, and help her to walk in forgiveness and love while also walking in wisdom and safety.
Lord, we lift her husband to You. Deliver him completely from alcohol and every substance, break every chain of addiction, heal his body and mind, and renew his heart. Convict him of sin and bring him to true repentance and to salvation in Jesus if he has not yet truly believed. Heal him from the lies he is hearing that divorce is the answer, and let him hear Your voice above every other voice. Cause him to love his wife as Christ loved the church, to be gentle, sober, responsible and faithful, and to embrace his calling as husband and father to all the children in this home, including the two bonus children who know only him as father. Restore unity out of love, that this family may grow together in Christ and honor You.
We rebuke the enemy's work over this home and we ask You to build a hedge of protection around this marriage and these children. Let Your will be done, and let restoration come in Your perfect timing and way. We trust You to do what is impossible for man, for with God all things are possible, Matthew 19:26. Keep this sister steadfast, not turning back, and let her testimony draw her husband and children closer to You. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, our hope and our redeemer, amen.
