Prayer for marriage restoration

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I’ve made many mistakes throughout my marriage I didn’t love my wife like Christ loved the church I hurt her deeply before I could realize my sins and errors she has left and is filing for divorce and refuses to have any open conversation with me anymore please pray for our restoration and for the Lord to heal and change her heart towards me and to pull our hearts closer to him and to each other through him please and thank you so much!!!!

We join you in bringing your marriage before the Lord with a heavy but hopeful heart, and we thank you for your honest confession. It takes humility to acknowledge that you did not love your wife as Christ loved the assembly and that you hurt her deeply, and God honors a broken and contrite heart. We hear your grief that she has left and is filing for divorce and will not speak with you, and we stand with you to seek God's will together in Jesus' name for restoration and healing.

Scripture is clear that marriage is a covenant that God Himself joins together. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart Matthew 19:6, and For I hate divorce, says Yahweh, the God of Israel Malachi 2:16. This shows us God's heart is for reconciliation and lifelong faithfulness between a man and a woman. At the same time God calls husbands to a very high standard, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it Ephesians 5:25, and to live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman 1 Peter 3:7. When we fail in that calling it is sin that needs true repentance, not only sorrow for the consequences but a turning away from the old ways. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. We encourage you to continue to confess fully to the Lord, to bear fruits worthy of repentance Matthew 3:8, and to demonstrate that changed heart over time through consistent, Christlike character, gentleness, patience, and selfless love, even if your wife cannot yet see it.

We also want to lovingly address that you asked for the Lord to heal and change her heart toward you. We agree that God can soften any heart, for The king's heart is in Yahweh's hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires Proverbs 21:1, and I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you Ezekiel 36:26. Yet we must also pray first for both of your hearts to be pulled closer to Him, for only He can truly heal wounds and bring forgiveness. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. We encourage you to respect the boundary she has set regarding conversation while remaining faithful in prayer, not pursuing manipulation or pressure, but showing honor and allowing the Lord and godly counsel to work. We urge you to seek wise, biblical counsel from a pastor or mature married elders who can walk with you, hold you accountable, and if the Lord opens the door, help facilitate a safe and godly conversation toward reconciliation. Continue steadfastly in prayer, for The effective, earnest prayer of a righteous man is powerfully effective James 5:16.

We notice your request speaks of the Lord but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is through His blood that we find forgiveness and the power to walk in newness of life and to love as He loves.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up this husband and his wife and their marriage covenant. Lord we confess the sins and failures that have wounded this union and we thank You for Your mercy that forgives when we confess. We ask You to do a deep work in his heart, to create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit, to teach him to love his wife as Christ loves the assembly, with sacrificial, patient, and purifying love. Heal the deep hurt in his wife's heart, comfort her in her pain, soften her heart where it has grown hard from wounds, and draw her close to You. Lord, You hate divorce and You desire reconciliation, so we ask if it be Your will, to restrain the divorce, to open a door for godly communication, and to bring healing and restoration that only You can bring. Give this husband wisdom to wait on You, to respect boundaries, to seek godly counsel, and to pursue holiness above all. Let both hearts be drawn closer to You first, and through You, closer to each other. We trust Your perfect will and Your power to redeem what is broken, and we ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, amen.

We encourage you to remain faithful in prayer and in the Word, to fast and pray as the Lord leads, and to trust that God is able to restore even what seems lost, for we know that all things work together for good for those who love God Romans 8:28, and He can restore the years that have been broken. Keep your eyes on Christ, walk in humility and obedience daily, and leave the outcome in His hands while never ceasing to hope for the marriage God joined together.

We hear how heavy this is for you, and we appreciate your honesty in owning the ways you hurt your wife. That kind of humility is painful but it matters, and we are praying with you in it.

You asked us to pray that God would change her heart toward you, and we will. At the same time we want to gently remind you that restoration, when God brings it, involves both people willingly choosing to rebuild love and trust together. You cannot make that choice for her, and pressing for conversation when she has said she does not want it can push her further away. The best way to love her now is to respect the boundary she has set while you keep tending to what God is doing in you.

A couple of steady steps we encourage:

Stay rooted in consistent, face-to-face accountability with a trusted pastor or mature counselor, not just to win her back but to walk out repentance over time and learn new patterns for how you love and listen. And as the legal process moves forward, get wise counsel so you respond with integrity and calm, using proper channels for any necessary communication rather than repeated personal appeals.

We are asking God to meet you both with grace in this hard season.

Father, we lift this husband to You and his wife to You. We ask for Your mercy and healing where there has been deep hurt, for wisdom for him to walk humbly and faithfully each day, and for Your will to be done in their marriage. Draw each heart closer to You and give clarity, peace, and protection in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your letter has been read with great heaviness of heart and with earnest hope before the throne of grace, for you have spoken honestly concerning your sin against your wife and against the Lord, confessing that you did not love her as Christ loved the church.

We do join you in prayer, and we would first point you to the nature of that repentance to which God has promised mercy. There is a carnal repentance that is of the flesh, a sorrow that seeks only to escape the judgment or to regain what has been lost. True repentance, that repentance which is the work of the Spirit of God and which God accepts, gives God glory. Here are scales and balances wherewith you may weigh your own heart before the Lord, whom no man can deceive. Do you grieve your sin because it has offended a holy, good and glorious God, or only because it has cost you your marriage. The repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant and admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart, the repentance which weeps and abhors past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and which avoids present sin because of the love of God who died for us, this is saving repentance. What is your repentance. Does it lead you to look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only. For repentance and remission of sins are joined together in His name, and where there is no true repentance there can be no remission, but where there is godly sorrow there is full and free forgiveness through His blood.

Remember also that repentance lives as long as faith. It is not an operation to be gotten through at the commencement and then put aside. It is sweet sister repentance who keeps company with the believer all his days, making a rainbow with her tears of grief for sin and her glances of hope at the love of Christ and His great finished work. Therefore we must ask, is your repentance practical. Will it yield works meet for repentance. Does it last, or does it not. A practical and lasting repentance will not rest in words or in sudden emotion, but will show itself in a renewed mind, a clean heart, a right spirit, in patient humility, in truthfulness, in self denial, and in a life that seeks first reconciliation with God.

The goodness of God leads to repentance. The Lord does not merely drive men as Cain was driven, but He draws. Consider His goodness to you even now, that you have been brought to see your sin, that you have the Word of God, that Christ has been set forth as the reconciling Saviour. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. He is the God of peace who has prepared everything necessary for a perfect reconciliation. Seek that reconciliation with God first, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone, for salvation is through Him alone. If you are restored to Him, you will be in the only place from which you can rightly love your wife, whether the Lord is pleased to restore the marriage or not.

We think of Peter, whose fall was followed not by months of hardness but by a speedy repentance when the Lord turned and looked upon him. That look severed Peter from the crowd and dissolved his heart in streams of bitter, salutary, saving repentance, and afterward the Lord abundantly assured him and restored him to service. Pray that the Lord would give you such a look, and that He would give it also to your wife according to His sovereign mercy. We cannot command the heart of another, nor should we seek to manipulate by pressure or continual pleading when she has asked for distance. True love respects that boundary and commends her to God in prayer, while it proves its change by quiet, consistent, holy living over time, under the counsel and accountability of faithful pastors and brethren.

We will pray for you, that the Lord would create in you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you, that He would keep you from a false repentance and give you repentance unto life, that He would draw you near to Christ and make you a faithful, gentle and steadfast man. And we will pray for your wife, that the Lord would heal her wounds, guard her heart, draw her also to Himself, and do that which is best and most for His glory. We will pray that if it be His will, He who has committed unto us the word of reconciliation would work reconciliation between you, that your hearts might be pulled closer to Him and, in Him, closer to one another. Yet above all we pray that His will be done, and that whether together or apart, both of you may know the peace of being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

May the Lord hear the cries which you pour out in secret, and make you to know more and more the love of Christ which alone can teach a man to love his wife aright.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such a beautiful response and yes I agree Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. I really appreciate you helping me in my time of need it’s a very powerful message I will keep near to my heart, I have faith in the restoration and I agree with Romans 8:28 that’s actually my wife’s favorite verse we met at work she would write it on sticky notes and leave them around my office and I believe God brought us together and I believe he will restore it in Jesus’ name thank you God bless

Your words strike true as any. I’ve been seeking repentance before the divorce filing but I think the filing may have obstructed my view of how I need to go about it I need to reconcile with God before reconciling with my wife is possible and make sure the repentance isn’t transactional and that it’s true from my heart remorse for my sins and a need to be more Christlike I thank you so much for your words and your prayer they are deeply appreciated more than you may think
