Lost child

Disciple of Prayer
Brethren, please pray for my son ### and I. Since the death of his mother two years ago, my son stop getting closer to me his father. I pray that the Lord will bring us closer as we was before. He is my only son. Lord help me Amen.

We hear your heartache, father, and we lift you and your son before the throne of grace with deep compassion. The loss of a wife and mother is a wound that cuts to the soul, and the silence that has grown between you and your son is a heavy burden to bear. But we serve a God who binds up the brokenhearted and restores what has been lost. Your prayer is not unheard, it is precious in His sight.

The Bible tells us, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18 WEB). This season of grief has left its mark, but it does not have the final word. We declare that the same God who raised Jesus from the dead can breathe new life into your relationship with your son. He is the Father of the fatherless and the Defender of the widow, He sees your tears and your longing for restoration.

We must also speak truth in love: grief, if left unaddressed, can harden into bitterness or isolation. Your son may be struggling with emotions he doesn’t know how to express. We encourage you to pursue him with patience and gentleness, not just in prayer, but in action. "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver" (Proverbs 25:11 WEB). Seek opportunities to listen, to share memories of his mother, and to remind him of his identity in Christ, not just as your son, but as a beloved child of God.

Father, we come before You now, interceding for this family. We ask that You would soften ’s heart and draw him back to his father. Break down the walls of grief and silence, Lord, and replace them with Your peace. Give this father wisdom to know how to love his son well, and give the son a spirit of openness and trust. We rebuke the enemy’s lies that say this distance is permanent, and we declare that healing is possible because "with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26 WEB).

We pray for comfort that surpasses understanding, for conversations that mend what is broken, and for the presence of Christ to fill the spaces where love once thrived. May this father and son find their way back to each other, not just as family, but as brothers in Christ, united in faith and hope. And may their bond be a testimony to Your faithfulness, Lord, for generations to come.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We feel the ache in your words, not just the grief of losing your wife, but the second pain of watching your son slip further away just when you need each other most. That kind of loneliness can carve deep into a father’s heart.

It often helps to remember that a child’s grief moves differently than an adult’s. A teenage or young adult son, even two years out, may not know what to do with the missing, so he distances himself, not from you, but from the whole painful part of life that his mother once filled. The pulling away feels personal, but it’s rarely a rejection. More likely, he’s protecting himself from another close loss, or simply doesn’t have words for what’s inside him. You’re not failing as a dad; you’re both still learning to breathe in a world that changed overnight.

When the time feels right, you might try small things that don’t demand a big emotional talk, a shared errand, a project he enjoys, or a quiet meal where you mention a good memory of his mom. No pressure to “get close” all at once, just showing him you’re there, steady and patient. Sometimes sons open up sideways, while doing something else alongside you. If he resists, that’s okay for now; keep showing up. And we’re grateful you’ve been bringing this to the Lord. He sees every weary day.

Father, we lift up this hurting dad to you. Comfort him in the empty spaces, and hold his son’s heart tenderly. Untie the knots of grief that keep them apart, and weave patience and courage into this father’s love. In your time, draw them back to each other, and let their shared home be a place of healing. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Great and terrible is the isolation that grief can bring, and you have tasted it now in double measure. The departure of your dear wife rent the household, and you find your own son’s heart seemingly rent from you as well. The cruelest dart of the enemy is to whisper in such a desolate hour that you are utterly alone. But you are not alone, for you have cried out to the Lord, and He hears the cry of the fatherless and the widower.

Do you perceive what a divine pattern your own aching heart now traces? You ask the Lord to bring your son near to you. And do you not see that this is precisely the ceaseless work of the Eternal Father toward us, His estranged children? In the secret counsels of eternity, He devised a way to draw a rebellious race back to His bosom. It is written, “Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life.” The Father gave His Son to the sorrow of death, that He might seek and save that which was lost. The Son of Man came down into the plague-house of this world to heal us. He bore our sins in His own body on the tree, enduring even the hiding of His Father’s face, so that a path of reconciliation might be carved through the mountain of our iniquity. Your present sorrow is a faint shadow of that great grief, and your fatherly yearning is a dim echo of the infinite love that seeks your son even now.

You ask that you and your son be brought together as you were before. But the true covenant prayer is that you both be drawn into a fellowship far deeper than mere natural affection, a fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. The eyes of mercy are quicker than the eyes of repentance. Even as David cried out with a broken heart for his rebellious Absalom, “Is the young man safe?”, so your own unquenched love for your son, even when he withdraws, is a noble, surviving grace. Let this grief drive you not to despair, but to the mercy seat where the Son of God, who is not ashamed to call us brethren, ever lives to make intercession. He who was born of a human mother and knows the rending of earthly ties will bind up these broken cords with His own wounded hands. Watch for the kiss of the Father’s forgiveness to fall upon your household; wait for the coming of the One who delights to bring the distant near.
