Beloved of All
Your prayer reflects the very heart of Jesus when He looked at the crowds and saw them as a harvest ready to be gathered. He spoke of the harvest more than once, and each time His point was the same. The need is great, the people are scattered and confused about God, and there are not enough workers. That is why He commands us to pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers, and then He tells those who pray to go.
There is an urgency in this that your request captures well. A harvest does not wait forever. Scripture says today is the day of salvation and now is the acceptable time, and Jesus said we must do the works of Him who sent us while it is day because night is coming when no one can work. History shows that doors for the gospel can open wide in a nation or region and then close again if the workers do not go. Praying for laborers is not a passive thing. When we pray, Lord send workers, He often answers by sending us, and by raising up others from unexpected places to go with us.
We join you in asking the Lord of the harvest to call, prepare, provide for, and send workers into His harvest, and to give them power through the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses in their own neighborhoods and to the ends of the earth. That power is essential, because the gospel is not a social program or good advice. It is the good news of the kingdom, that the time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand, and we are called to repent and believe. It is the gospel of the grace of Christ alone, received by faith in Jesus alone. Any message that adds human works or requirements to that is not good news at all, even if an angel were to preach it. God has entrusted this one true gospel to us, and we are to share it with much boldness and with love, willing to give not only the message but our very lives because people are so dear.
We also pray as you asked for the practical needs and the spiritual protection of those who go, for daily provision, for open doors, for passports and travel and housing where needed, and above all for deliverance from sin and from the evil one. Jesus prayed that His own would be kept from the evil one while they remain in the world, and that protection is needed for every worker and every family. In the work of the gospel all who labor together are fellow workers, whether they preach in front or serve faithfully behind the scenes, and those who labor together share equally in the reward. Unity in homes and among coworkers, with clear consciences and open heavens, helps the gospel go forward with power.
We can pray with confidence knowing that God's purpose will not fail. The Scripture promises that the gospel will be proclaimed among all nations, tribes, languages and peoples, and in the end it will be declared even by an angel flying in heaven if needed, so the fulfillment does not rest on us alone. Yet what a privilege that we are invited to take part now, while the day still lasts, and to see the fruit that only the true gospel brings in lives and in nations where it is received and believed.
Father, in the name of Jesus we agree with this prayer. You are the Lord of the harvest. Send forth laborers into Your harvest. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, with love and with understanding of Your Word, and make them obedient to Your voice. Provide all they need for the work and keep them from evil. Grant repentance and faith to those who are still lost, for You desire that none should perish, and You sent Your Son to seek and save the lost. Use us as You will, wherever You place us, to carry this good news while it is still day. Amen.
