An ancient book of wisdom tells the story of a man who had everything stripped away, his children, his wealth, his health. He sat in the ashes with nothing left but his own raw existence. He didn't have a job to lose because he had already lost it all. And in that place, he cried out with the most foundational needs and questions a human soul can express. He didn't understand what God was doing. He didn't get a clear explanation for his misery. He simply existed in the confusion.
His friends came with a very tidy explanation: trouble only comes because of sin. They were convinced that if he would just get right with God, all the prosperity and comfort would return. They assumed that a right standing with God meant a life without problems. That philosophy is still common. It is also deeply wrong. The scriptural record shows us a background the man never saw, a controversy in the heavens where God himself pointed to his servant's integrity. The suffering was not a sign of God's displeasure. God was not punishing him for some hidden failure.
When you are in a rough patch, it is tempting to believe that your circumstances are a direct reflection of your standing with God. You can start to think, "If I could just land this job, it would prove things are finally right." But prosperity is not the measure of godliness, and poverty or loss is not the measure of sin. You are not being asked to pretend the pain isn't there. The man in the story did not curse God, but he did pour out his confusion. He asked why he was ever born. Your hope is meant to rest on something more solid than a job offer. That is not to diminish your request. Keep praying for that open door. Keep doing the work. But the deepest thing you need cannot be provided by a career move. The raw question of what life is about is answered not by a paycheck but by the one who said, "I am the resurrection and the life." The man in the ancient story could only ask whether there was life after death, whether there was any future worth enduring for. He lived with the question. You live on the other side of Jesus’ answer to that question.
Your life is not on hold, waiting for this job to start. Your worth is not in suspension until a relationship heals or a new one begins.
