We lift our hearts in awe and gratitude as we reflect on the high priestly prayer of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, recorded in John 17:13-26. What a profound moment this was—our Savior interceding for us before the Father, even before the foundation of the world! We are humbled to stand in agreement with His prayer, for it reveals the depth of His love, the purpose of our calling, and the glory that awaits those who are His.
Father, we thank You for the joy of Christ that You desire to fulfill within us. As Jesus prayed, *"But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so they may have My joy fulfilled within them"* (John 17:13). Lord, we ask that this joy—unshakable, divine, and rooted in Your presence—would be our strength, especially in times of trial. Let us not be swayed by the fleeting pleasures or sorrows of this world, but let Your joy be our anchor, a testimony to Your goodness and faithfulness.
We also thank You for Your Word, which Jesus has given to us. *"I have given them Your Word, and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world"* (John 17:14). Father, we recognize that Your Word is truth, and it is our sanctification. We pray that we would not only read and hear Your Word but that we would live it out in every area of our lives. Let it transform our minds, guard our hearts, and guide our steps. Protect us from the hatred of the world, and give us courage to stand firm in the truth, even when it is unpopular or costly.
Jesus prayed, *"I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one"* (John 17:15). Lord, we live in a world that is increasingly hostile to Your truth, where the evil one seeks to deceive, distract, and destroy. We ask for Your divine protection over our minds, our families, and our churches. Guard us from temptation, from the lies of the enemy, and from the snares of sin. Strengthen us to resist the devil, knowing that he will flee when we submit to You and stand firm in Your Word (James 4:7).
We are struck by the beauty of Jesus’ prayer for our sanctification: *"Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth"* (John 17:17). Father, we confess that we cannot sanctify ourselves—it is Your work in us. We surrender to the refining fire of Your Holy Spirit, asking that You would purify us, mold us, and make us more like Christ. Let Your Word dwell in us richly, shaping our thoughts, words, and actions so that we may reflect Your holiness to the world.
One of the most powerful aspects of this prayer is Jesus’ desire for our unity: *"that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me"* (John 17:21). Lord, we grieve over the division that exists among Your people—divisions over doctrine, pride, cultural differences, and personal preferences. We repent for the times we have contributed to disunity, whether through gossip, judgment, or indifference. Forgive us, and restore us to the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). Let our love for one another be a testimony to the world that You are real, that You are alive, and that You have transformed us.
Jesus also prayed, *"I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one"* (John 17:22). Father, we stand in awe of this truth—that You have shared Your glory with us! This glory is not for our own exaltation but for the purpose of unity and mission. Let us walk in humility, laying down our rights, our agendas, and our pride so that we may reflect the love and unity of the Trinity. May our lives together proclaim to the world that You sent Jesus, and that You love them as You love Him (John 17:23).
We are deeply moved by Jesus’ longing for us to be with Him where He is: *"Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world"* (John 17:24). Lord, this is our ultimate hope—the promise of eternal life in Your presence, where we will see Your glory face to face. Until that day, let us live with eternity in view. Let us store up treasures in heaven, not on earth (Matthew 6:19-20). Let us run the race with endurance, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Finally, we thank You for the revelation of Your name: *"Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. And I have made Your Name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them"* (John 17:25-26). Father, we pray that Your name would be hallowed in our lives, in our families, and in our churches. Let us not take Your name in vain, but let it be the foundation of our worship, our prayers, and our witness. May the world come to know You through us, and may Your love—so perfectly demonstrated in Christ—dwell richly in our hearts.
We close this prayer by standing in agreement with the words of Jesus, declaring that we are not of this world, but we are sent into it as ambassadors of Your kingdom. Equip us, Lord, to be faithful witnesses, to love as You have loved us, and to live in a manner worthy of the calling we have received (Ephesians 4:1). May Your joy, Your Word, Your name, and Your love be evident in us, so that the world may know that You are God, and that Jesus Christ is Lord.
In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
