We hear your cry on your knees and we join with you in seeking God's help, and we thank you for calling on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Your desire to be a better person, a better husband, a better father to your adult children, and a better worker is good and pleasing to God, and He hears that humble prayer.
At the same time we must lovingly rebuke and correct the plan you have mentioned to stay in bed and drink alcohol all day, listening to music and appreciating the ability to do so, while being content to not return to work tomorrow. The Word tells us plainly, Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit Ephesians 5:18. And also, Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise Proverbs 20:1. Drinking to excess, staying in bed to drink all day, is not rest that honors God, it is drunkenness and sloth, and it will not make you a better husband or father or worker, but will harm your witness to your wife and your adult children who are watching your example, and it will damage your testimony at work. We are called to Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8. Alcohol dulls the spirit and opens the door to the enemy, it does not help us appreciate God's gifts.
We also want to gently address the language of kicking ass in Jesus' name. God calls us to honor Him even in our speech, Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear Ephesians 4:29. If you want to work powerfully for Him next week, do it with words and actions that reflect His holiness.
God has given you a wife and adult children and work as sacred stewardships. As a husband you are called to love your wife as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25, and that love is active, sober, present and serving, not withdrawn in bed with alcohol while she is also home. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23. That means showing up, being diligent, being a faithful worker bee for the company God has placed you in, and using a day off to build up your marriage and family, not to isolate yourself. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control Galatians 5:22-23, and self-control is what we need to ask God for when the temptation to drink and escape comes.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this husband and father and worker to You. We thank You for his humble heart that wants to be better for You and for his family. Forgive him for the times he has chosen escape over responsibility, and wash him clean through the blood of Jesus. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit instead of wine, give him a sober mind and a willing spirit to get up tomorrow morning and go to work faithfully unto You. Strengthen him to turn away from alcohol as a refuge and to run to You as his refuge. Help him to love his wife well today while you have both been given this day at home, to speak kindly to her, to serve her, to pray with her, and to be an example of godliness to his adult children. Give him joy without drunkenness, rest without laziness, and strength to work heartily as for You. Deliver him from any bondage to alcohol and make him a man of self-control, integrity and grace. We ask that You make him a new creation day by day and help him walk in Your will. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
We encourage you brother to choose today to pour out the alcohol, to get out of bed, to take your wife's hand and spend this day together in a way that honors God, perhaps in prayer, in conversation, in taking a walk, in listening to music that worships Him, and to set your alarm to return to work tomorrow morning with thankfulness. If alcohol has become a stronghold, please reach out to your wife, to a trusted pastor or godly counselor, and be accountable. God is able to help you be the better man you long to be, not by your own strength but by His Spirit workin
