We hear your honest cry and we join with you before the throne of grace in Jesus' name, thanking God that you have turned to Him and called upon Jesus Christ for help, for there is hope and forgiveness and power to change in Him alone.
We want to gently but firmly address what you have confessed, because we love you and want to see you walk in freedom. The Word says in Ephesians 5:18 Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, and in Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Drunkenness is not just a struggle or a sickness, it is sin that separates us from God's best and it will destroy your health, your marriage, your witness as a father, and your work if it is not repented of and forsaken. 1 Corinthians 6:10 warns that drunkards will not inherit God's Kingdom unless they repent, but the good news is in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. You are not too far gone and it is not too late while you have breath, now is the time to turn fully away from alcohol. 2 Corinthians 6:2 Behold, now is the accepted time. Behold, now is the day of salvation.
We understand the temptation to just lay in bed and drink and stare out the window and pretend it will be okay, but pretending keeps you in bondage. God calls us to wake up, to be sober minded, and to walk in the light. 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Alcohol will not give you true rest, it steals your sleep and brings troubled dreams and nightmares, and it robs you of peace. God promises true rest when we trust Him. Psalm 4:8 In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. And Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
We also rejoice that you desire to be a better husband and a better dad to your adult kids and a better worker. That is God's will for you. Marriage is a holy covenant and God wants you to love your wife as Christ loved the church and to be an example of faithfulness and sobriety to your children, even though they are grown. And in your work, God calls you to diligence. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. You cannot be the husband, father, and worker God created you to be while you are giving yourself to alcohol.
So we pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we lift up this dear brother to You in the name of Jesus Christ. We thank You that he has come to You in humility and confessed that he has fallen back into drunkenness and needs help. Lord, forgive him as he confesses his sin to You, cleanse him and deliver him. Break the chains of alcohol in his life by the power of the Holy Spirit. Give him a hatred for what You hate and a hunger for righteousness. Take away the craving and the desire to hide in bed with a bottle and fill him instead with Your Spirit, with purpose and hope. Lord, we ask for Your mercy over his sleep tonight and every night. Quiet his mind, calm his anxious thoughts, remove nightmares and let him lie down in peace and sleep in safety under Your watch. Restore his body from the effects of alcohol. Help him tomorrow morning at work, give him clarity, strength, honesty, and a good testimony. Help him to be the husband You have called him to be, faithful, loving, sober, and present, and help him to be a godly father to his adult children, that they may see Christ in him and be drawn to You. Surround him with accountability, help him to confess to his wife and to a trusted pastor or godly brother as James 5:16 calls us to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed, and help him to remove all alcohol from his reach and to seek help from Your people and if needed from counselors who honor You. Show him that 1 Corinthians 10:13 is true, that No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Make that way of escape clear to him, Lord, and give him the courage to take it. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our only hope, amen.
We encourage you, brother, to act today on this prayer. Do not wait. Pour out any alcohol in your home, tell your wife and a pastor honestly what you have shared here, and ask them to hold you accountable daily. Spend time in the Word each morning before work, even a few verses, and pray instead of drinking when the craving comes. If you fall, confess quickly and get back up, for Proverbs 24:16 says a righteous man falls seven times, and rises up again. God is able to make you a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. Keep seeking Jesus, not the bottle, and trust that He will make you the man, husband, father, and worker He created you to be.
