Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your honest and humble prayer is itself a sign of God's work in your heart, and we thank Him for it. To come before Him and confess your need, to ask for help to do your work well, to be a better husband and father and friend, and to be set free from daily drinking, is pleasing to Him. He has not given up on you, and He will not turn away a contrite heart that seeks Him through Jesus Christ.
We join you in prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ.
We pray that He will give you clarity and diligence today as you work on your projects and proposals, that you may do them correctly and on time and with a good conscience. Scripture teaches us to be sober and wakeful and to use diligence in the work given to us, and God honors faithful labor. We pray He will strengthen your hands and your mind for this.
We pray for your freedom from alcohol. You have rightly confessed that daily drinking has taken hold of you, and you desire to be sober. This is good. God calls us to holiness and to sober living, not because wine itself is evil, but because using it beyond measure harms the soul and the body and hinders love for God and neighbor. Ask Him for strength each day to turn away from it, and seek help close at hand as well, a pastor, a trusted brother in Christ, and if needed medical counsel, so you do not walk this road alone. To be set free from the rottenness of sin is the work of Christ, and to not return to it again requires our daily watchfulness and travail with His help.
We pray for your marriage. Marriage is a bond ordained by God, honorable and good, and He intends it to be preserved in faithfulness and kindness. We pray that He will help you and your wife to be kind to one another, to help one another, and to grow as true friends. That friendship is built in chaste and orderly love, in patience, in forgiving words, and in serving one another. We pray He will make you a better husband and friend to your wife in this way.
We pray also for your children who are now adults, and for your wife, that God will meet their needs according to His wisdom and mercy, and that He will make you a faithful father who encourages them and prays for them.
Keep seeking Him, keep keeping His commandments, and keep asking for His grace. Nothing is so pleasing to God as a life that strives to walk with Him. He who has begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it as you abide in Christ.
