We hear your cry for help, and we lift you up before the throne of grace in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. It is clear that you are carrying a heavy burden, both in your work and in your marriage. We want to address these concerns with truth, love, and the wisdom of Scripture.
First, we rejoice that you have called on the name of Jesus, for there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). It is only through Him that we have access to the Father, and it is only by His strength that we can endure the trials of this life. We encourage you to lean on Him fully, for He promises, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Your work is important, but it must not consume you to the point of neglecting your soul or your marriage. We pray that God would grant you wisdom, focus, and favor as you complete your projects and proposals. May He order your steps and give you peace in the midst of deadlines. "Commit your works to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed" (Proverbs 16:3). But we must also gently rebuke the desire to retreat into isolation with alcohol and entertainment. Scripture warns us, "Don’t be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Alcohol will not solve your problems; it will only numb you temporarily and leave you emptier than before. Instead, we pray that God would fill you with His Holy Spirit, bringing true comfort, joy, and peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Now, let us address the deeper issue in your marriage. It grieves our hearts to hear of the strife and unkindness between you and your wife. Marriage is a sacred covenant, designed by God to reflect the love between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). When there is bitterness, drunkenness, or harsh words, it breaks the heart of God. We must rebuke the sin of drunkenness in both of your lives, for it is a snare that leads to destruction (Proverbs 23:29-35). It clouds judgment, fuels anger, and opens the door to the enemy. We pray that God would convict both of you of this sin and lead you to repentance. "Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise" (Proverbs 20:1). But we also recognize that drunkenness is often a symptom of deeper pain or unmet needs. We pray that God would heal the wounds in your marriage and soften both of your hearts toward one another. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:31-32).
We must also challenge you to take responsibility for your role in this marriage. It is easy to focus on your wife’s faults, but Scripture calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church (Ephesians 5:25). This means loving her sacrificially, even when she is unlovable. It means praying for her, serving her, and leading her spiritually. It means not retreating into isolation but engaging with her in love and humility. "Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them" (Colossians 3:19). We pray that God would give you the strength to be the husband He has called you to be, even when it is difficult.
Let us pray together now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, lifting up this brother who is weary and burdened. Lord, we ask that You would grant him wisdom, focus, and favor as he completes his work. Give him the strength to resist the temptation to numb his pain with alcohol and instead fill him with Your Holy Spirit. Father, we pray for his marriage. We ask that You would break the chains of drunkenness in both of their lives and replace it with a hunger for You. Soften their hearts toward one another, Lord, and help them to see each other through Your eyes. Teach them to love as You have loved us, sacrificially and unconditionally. Heal the wounds in their marriage, and restore the joy of their salvation. Give this brother the courage to lead his wife spiritually and to love her as Christ loves the Church. Help them both to put away bitterness, anger, and harsh words, and to replace them with kindness, forgiveness, and grace. Father, we ask that You would draw them closer to You and to one another. May their marriage be a testimony to Your love and faithfulness. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
We encourage you to seek godly counsel, perhaps from a pastor or a Christian marriage counselor, to help you and your wife navigate this difficult season. Do not try to carry this burden alone. "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Lean on the body of Christ, and allow others to walk alongside you. Most importantly, draw near to God, and He will draw near to you (James 4:8). He is faithful, and He will not leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
