Disciple of Prayer
Dear God thank you for helping me and for forgiving me. Thank you for helping me get a little bit of rest last night. I am know awake laying in my bed by my self in my own room and having a drink of Jim beam and Sprite my favorite drink. I will not be drunk because I have a high tolerance to alcohol. I'm just relaxing and enjoying my drink. I will be able to get to work on time and I will figure out how to do my work. I hope that my liver and my brain will be ok. I hope that I can get back my courage and the strength to be a better husband and a better person and a better dad to our adult kid's and a better worker. Thank you for everything that you have given me. Please help my wife and our adult kid's and my coworkers and my customers and my bosses with what they need. Please don't let the plague from Russia hurt us. We don't need another Covid disaster. Again please forgive me and please help me. Please help my wife and I with our AUD and our adult son with his Beer use and his cigarettes and pot smoking use. Please help our adult daughter with her marriage and her pregnancy and let her have a happy birthday this week. Please soften the hearts of my bosses and my coworkers and my customers and especially my wife and please soften my heart too! Amen

We are grateful you reached out again and we join with you in thanking God for His forgiveness and for the rest He gave you last night. We give thanks with you for all He has provided and for your desire to be a better husband, father and worker, and we want to lift up your wife, your adult children, your coworkers, bosses and customers before the Lord with you.

We also want to lovingly speak truth to you about the alcohol, because we care for you and want God's best for you. You mentioned you are drinking Jim Beam and Sprite and that you will not be drunk because you have a high tolerance. The Bible warns us that this thinking can deceive us. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise Proverbs 20:1. And do not be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit Ephesians 5:18. We are also told to be sober and self-controlled. Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8. A high tolerance does not mean alcohol is not affecting your body, your mind, your judgment or your witness, and it does not protect your liver and brain. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God. You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. True relaxation, courage and strength do not come from drink but from the Lord, for God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7 and I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me Philippians 4:13.

We hear your honest confession about AUD for you and your wife, and your son's use of beer, cigarettes and marijuana. This is not something to manage alone with willpower. God calls us to confess, to turn away, and to walk in sobriety and to seek help. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. We encourage you both, and your son, to bring this into the light with a trusted pastor, a biblical counselor, and if needed medical help and an accountability group in your church, so you can bear one another's burdens and walk in freedom. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13.

We rejoice that you want to honor your marriage and your family. God has given marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and your desire to be a better husband and father is pleasing to Him. We pray you will lead your home with love, gentleness and sobriety, and that your daughter's marriage will be strengthened in Christ and that her pregnancy and her birthday this week will be filled with joy and peace, for you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother's womb Psalm 139:13.

We also hear your concern about work and about fear of a plague from Russia. God wants us to bring our anxieties to Him and to work with diligence as unto Him. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men Colossians 3:23. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness and for every good gift You have given this family. Lord, we ask You to forgive us where we have sought comfort in alcohol and other substances rather than in You, and cleanse us and give us a new heart. We ask that You will give us a new heart and put a new spirit within us and take away the stony heart out of our flesh Ezekiel 36:26. Help this husband and his wife to turn fully from alcohol, help their son to turn from beer, cigarettes and marijuana, and set them free to be sober, clear minded and filled with Your Spirit. Protect their bodies, their livers and minds, and heal what has been harmed. Give this man courage and strength to be the godly husband and father You have called him to be, to love his wife as Christ loved the church Ephesians 5:25, to be an example to his adult children, and to work faithfully and wisely. Soften his heart and the hearts of his wife, his bosses, coworkers and customers, and let grace and patience abound. Watch over his daughter, bless her marriage, keep her and her unborn child safe, and grant her a joyful birthday. Guard this whole family and community from disease and fear, and help them to trust in You and not be afraid. Lead them daily to seek You first and to find rest in You alone. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We are grateful you reached out and shared so honestly. We hear your thankfulness for rest last night and also the weight you are carrying wanting to be a stronger husband, father and worker, and to get to work and do your job well.

We also hear your concern about your health and about alcohol for you and your wife and your son. Wanting courage and strength for your family is a good desire, and wanting to care for your body matters too. Since you mentioned worries about your liver and brain and drinking even with a high tolerance, we encourage you to talk with your doctor or another trusted health professional soon, and to reach out to a pastor or counselor or a recovery support group in your area. You do not have to sort through AUD concerns alone, and having someone to walk with you and your wife together can make a real difference. If work feels shaky, a brief honest conversation with a supervisor or a trusted coworker about what support is available can also ease pressure.

We are praying for your wife, your adult son and daughter, your daughter's pregnancy and birthday this week, and for your workplace and customers. We also hear your worry about another widespread illness and hold that before the Lord too.

Father, in Jesus name we ask you to give this brother rest, clear thinking and help for today at work. Draw near to him and his wife and children, guard their health, guide their steps toward wise help and community, and soften all of your hearts toward you and toward one another. Amen.

Your prayer has been read with care and with thankfulness that you have turned to the Lord Jesus Christ for help and forgiveness. We thank God with you for any rest He has granted, and we join you in asking for His mercy upon you and your household.

We must speak to you plainly and lovingly concerning that which you mention about your drink. The Scripture teaches us to be sober minded and to be not mastered by anything, and that wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging. A high tolerance does not make the soul safe, for the danger lies not only in drunkenness but in looking to the cup for courage, rest, or comfort which belongs to Christ alone. Your body is not your own, for it is the temple of the Holy Ghost, and to care for your liver and your brain is part of honoring God with the life He has given you. We urge you, for the sake of your soul, your wife, your children, and your witness at work, to turn from this dependence and to seek the Lord for deliverance, and to seek also the practical help of a faithful pastor, godly counsel, and, where needed, medical help for what you rightly name as AUD. The Lord is able to deliver from the pit, for He has found a ransom. That ransom is not our resolve but the blood of the Lamb slain, the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone can lift a man from the slavery of sin which takes away manliness and courage from the spirit.

You ask for courage to be a better husband, father, and worker. True courage does not come from the glass but from the grace of God. Like Peter, whose courage failed and who fell, yet was restored by the look of the Lord and made stronger than before, so the Lord can restore you. When He sets the bones of His people, He does His work effectually. Confess your need to Him, forsake that which entangles, and walk in daily dependence upon Christ, in prayer, in the Word, and in faithful labor. Then you will be better equipped to love your wife as Christ loved the church, to be a steady example to your adult children, and to do your work heartily as unto the Lord, that your bosses, coworkers, and customers may see Christ in you.

We also hear your burden for your family. We will pray that the Lord will work in your wife as He works in you, that you both may know deliverance together, and that your adult son may be delivered from his use of beer, cigarettes, and pot. These things promise relief but bring bondage, and only Christ can break those chains. For your adult daughter, we pray that the Lord will bless her marriage according to His design, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that He will grant her safety in her pregnancy and joy on her birthday, and that her home may be built on the fear of the Lord.

Concerning your fear of plague and disaster, remember that the Lord reigns and that His ear is not shut to those who come to Him through His Son. The promise that He is our Father belongs not to all by mere creation, but to those who are born again through faith in Christ. If you are His child by faith, you may come boldly and say, Our Father which art in heaven, and know that He hears. If you have not yet fully trusted Him, fly to Christ now, for He has found the ransom and He will not turn away any sinner who comes to Him.

We pray for you in this way. O Lord our God, have mercy upon this man. Forgive his sins through the blood of Jesus Christ, deliver him from going down to the pit, for Thou hast found a ransom. Take away the love of strong drink and give instead a love for sobriety, clarity, and communion with Christ. Restore unto him courage and strength, not from the flesh but from Thy Spirit, that he may be a faithful husband, father, and laborer. Soften his heart and the hearts of his wife, his children, his bosses, coworkers, and customers, and draw each one to Thyself. Keep his household in Thy hand, guard his daughter and her child, turn his son from all bondage, and let this family declare the works of the Lord after their affliction and deliverance. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ alone, our only hope and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to walk in the light, to put away that which hinders, to meet regularly with a faithful local church, and to let your gratitude be shown by a life that declares what the Lord has done.
