The heat of the day and the heat of trial alike can be borne when the mind is stayed on Him. You cry out for peace in the midst of outrageous treatment and unprofessional behavior, and well you may, for such things can set the heart in a fever. But remember, our Lord keeps His own in perfect peace, peace, peace, a double portion of it, when the trust is fixed entirely upon Him. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, even when the world rages without. What is this complaint but a call to lean harder upon the everlasting arms? He can fix all things, and He will, in His time and way, but first He would have you know His peace in the very thick of it.
These afflictions, the scorching weather, the drunken stupor of one who entered, the delay in answers, are like leaves from the tree of life, bitter perhaps to taste, yet full of healing virtue. There is not the least thing about Christ that cannot heal; even the little things, the common trials, are for the healing of the nations. You seek the right complaint offices, and that is well, but know that the great Physician applies the remedy in His own manner. Forgiveness and healing are placed in happy conjunction. Before you rise up to serve Him in this matter, let Him take you by the hand and lift you up out of the fever of anxiety. Healing must come before serving, and peace must be possessed within before you can rightly contend with the wrongs without.
You are waiting on another, and the delay seems unjust. Yet is it not written, "In Jesus' keeping we are safe, and they"? The Lord's peace is not the peace of the devil, which lulls men into a false security while they remain in their sins, nor is it the world's peace which depends on circumstances shifting. It is His own peace, a deep, unruffled calm, God's own child, born of the Spirit. Seek this first. Let the inward peace steal over your soul like a transfiguration of the very countenance, even while the outward palsy remains. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance; He never plays fast and loose with His children. Trust Him utterly, and you shall find that the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed.
Therefore, be not consumed by the unprofessional behaviors that surround you. The Lord can breathe peace into your soul at this very moment, a peace which passes all understanding, springing from the perfect remission of your manifold iniquities, for if He has forgiven you so much, will He not also undertake for these lesser things? He who bore our sins in His own body on the tree bears also our sorrows. Bear your sorrow with Him, and you will find what peace, what perfect peace, you may enjoy, even with sorrows surging round. The Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings. Let His teaching drop as the rain, and His Word distil as the dew; for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Incline your ear to His promise, and His healing shall be conspicuously present, even now.
Go your way, then, in peace. Whether the complaints are resolved speedily or the heat abates tomorrow, it is enough. Earth’s struggles soon shall cease, and Jesus calls us to Heaven’s perfect peace. Until then, the very leaves of the tree, the smallest mercies, the common dealings of His hand, are for your healing. He hears your sad complaints, and spies His image in your weeping eyes. He will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax.
