We hear your deep concern and desire for godly leadership in the upcoming elections, and we stand with you in praying for wisdom, righteousness, and justice in our nation’s governance. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 21:1 (WEB), "The king’s heart is in Yahweh’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires." This truth reassures us that God is sovereign over all earthly authorities, and He can direct the hearts of leaders according to His will.

However, we must also address a few critical points with love and truth. First, while we pray for political outcomes, our ultimate hope and trust must be in God alone, not in any candidate, party, or election result. Psalm 146:3-5 (WEB) warns, "Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Yahweh, his God." Our faith must rest in Christ, not in earthly power.

Second, we must guard our hearts against bitterness or despair if outcomes do not align with our desires. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (WEB) instructs us, "I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men: for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence." Our prayers should reflect a spirit of humility, gratitude, and submission to God’s perfect plan, even when we don’t understand it.

Lastly, we must examine our motives. Are we seeking God’s will or our own agenda? James 4:3 (WEB) says, "You ask and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." Let us pray that God’s will be done, not our own, and that He would raise up leaders who honor Him, regardless of political affiliation.

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, acknowledging Your sovereignty over all nations and leaders. We lift up the upcoming elections, asking that You would guide the hearts of voters and candidates alike. Raise up men and women who fear You, who will govern with wisdom, justice, and integrity. Father, we confess any pride or idolatry in our hearts, any trust we have placed in earthly power rather than in You. Forgive us, Lord, and realign our hearts with Yours.

We pray for unity among Your people, that we would stand together in prayer and righteousness, not divided by politics but united in Christ. Protect us from fear, bitterness, or despair, and fill us with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. May Your will be done in our nation, for Your glory alone. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen."

Once the victory seemed an ample compensation, but what victory is it you seek? The righteous man goes to the death chamber with a quiet conscience, and his last end is to wave the palm of victory, to wear the crown of triumph. You cry out in a spirit defeated, looking to the arm of flesh in a midterm election, as if a mere man could secure a better nation. But was it ever thought of that sinful man should be adopted into the Divine family? The impetuous character of your plea shows you look upon some human visitation as the one thing needed.

O righteous Father, the world has not known You. The heathen world knew nothing of a righteous Father, the true idea of Divine Fatherhood was unknown. Being themselves unrighteous, they sought not after a righteous God. The present is the most godless generation that ever trod this earth, I verily believe, because it will not trace Divine Sovereignty in all such cases. We ought to recognize God’s hand in everything. If God were always snatching the righteous from the midst of every danger, men would harden their hearts. He will not stop the ordinary run of business, and yet he knows how to bring up the righteous from deep distress.

There is no attribute of God more comforting to his children than the doctrine of Divine Sovereignty. Your election is personal and eternal, not a fleeting seven-year seat in a house of men. By eternal destination, sovereign grace we here receive. Let a man be elected according to the Divine purpose, and he shall hold his seat when the sun shall have grown dim with age. Do not fancy that election excuses supine idleness, no, every one fought, and great was the victory. O Spirit of the living God, descend on every heart, and bid every one of thy soldiers take his sword. It is not commencing as though the whole world were to be cleared by one display of fire and sword, but continuing, going from strength to strength, from victory to victory.

When you know God as righteous, and yet Father, then you see the righteous way of salvation has put away all sin by laying it upon Christ. There is no reason why the Lord should be angry with us. His divine interpositions come by remarkable deliverances full of wonder. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, and set my feet upon a rock. You are sitting there this day to say, He hath delivered my soul from death. Wherein would sin differ as to its consequences if God were always suffering the wicked to drown? Think for a little, and you will see reason for God’s staying his hand from immediate rescue. But for you, give diligence to make your calling and election sure, and your dying shout shall be victory, victory, victory, as you shut your eyes like a warrior in his glory. That is the abundant entrance. Let me swell the everlasting song, and cast my crown before Jehovah’s feet.

You pray for the defeat of one candidate and the success of another, thinking this will bring a better outcome. But consider: is it always victory that profits? There is a defeat that brings profit, and a victory that brings hurt. The martyr, dragged away, bound, beaten, and slain, what the world calls utter defeat, that very end is the glorious victory. For he who suffers wrong and endures with self-command, this is the one who wears the crown. So often in this life, to be defeated is better. Do not seek victory everywhere. He who overreaches seems to conquer, but his victory is evil and destroys himself; he who is wronged and bears it nobly, he conquers indeed.

Rather than instruct God how to order the affairs of men, let your prayer steady your own soul. Rise early, make God propitious by prayer and supplication, and go forth to your daily fight with security. The marketplace is a storm, each day a battle; we need the great weapon of prayer. Yet do not think prayer compels God to do our bidding. Christ Himself, when He raised Lazarus, did not pray from weakness. He gave thanks, saying, “Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard Me,” to show that His will and the Father’s are one. He assumed the form of prayer only for the sake of the bystanders, that they might believe. So your prayer should ever be, “Thy will be done,” committing all to Him who works all things for good.

And do not suppose you need no prayer, or that you can wait idly until God grants your request. Even Paul needed the prayers of the saints, and the Apostles did not always heal or obtain what they desired. They dispensed miracles not on all occasions, lest more be ascribed to them than was right. God answers according to what is best, not always according to our wishes. Therefore keep praying, yes, pray without ceasing, but pray to be found faithful whatever the result, to endure with patience, and to overcome not by outward conflict but by endurance. The true victory is not striking back, but bearing insult and loss calmly. When you control your own anger and rest in God’s will, you have gained a victory that no earthly election can give. Seek not the fleeting honor of men; seek the praise of God alone. In the end, it is He who raises up and puts down rulers. Strive not to conquer in the world’s way, but to learn the invincible strength of quiet trust. That is the victory that matters, and it will never be overturned.

I hear the ache in your words, the weight of a setback that feels like defeat. When hopes for a better future seem dashed by an election loss, it is natural to cry out to God with raw honesty. That very impulse, to bring your disappointment to the Father rather than stewing in it, is itself a gift of grace.

But let me gently remind us both that the purpose of prayer is never to twist God’s arm until He gives us what we want. Jesus Himself modelled a prayer that begins with “Your kingdom come, your will be done.” True prayer starts with God’s purposes and then shapes our hearts to long for them. Too often we treat prayer as a tool to get our own wishes accomplished, and then we wonder why we ask and do not receive, because we ask with wrong motives. The throne of heaven is not a voting booth, and the Father is not a candidate we pressure into office. He rules, and His will is already perfectly good.

When David faced a national defeat that felt like God had cast them off, he poured out his heart in a raw, plaintive psalm. But notice what happened: through prayer, he was brought from a spirit of defeat into a position of strength and song. The circumstances did not immediately change, but his perspective did. He handed the unmanageable situation over to God and left it in His hands. That is why prayer is such a place of power for the believer. It lifts us out of the doldrums, not by giving us a political victory on our terms, but by anchoring our trust in the One who holds history.

So, keep praying. Not as a last resort after scheming fails, but as your first and constant response. Persist, because persistence opens the door for God to do what He has been wanting to do all along without violating your will. As you linger in His presence, let the Spirit search your heart. Ask Him to align your desires with His perfect plan, even for your nation. The most freeing prayer you can ever utter is simply, “Have your way, Lord. Work out your complete will in my life and in this land.”

Don’t let a sense of defeat overwhelm you as though the problem has overwhelmed God. Recognize the One to whom you speak. He knows what you need before you ask. Your prayer, however short or silent, is heard. Let it become less about a particular name on a ballot and more about a deep, effectual cry: “Your kingdom come.” Then, in His time, you will find that the spirit of defeat gives way to quiet confidence, because the battle ultimately belongs to Him.
