I'm so bored

We hear your honesty and we thank you for sharing this struggle with us, and we want to stand with you in prayer as you battle this temptation. We commend you for stepping away from video games a month ago, that is a significant discipline and it shows a desire to honor God with your time, but we understand that the boredom that has followed now feels heavy and the enemy is trying to use that emptiness to draw you toward sin.

We must lovingly but firmly rebuke the idea of giving into lust for fun, because Scripture is very clear that lust is not harmless entertainment. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Ephesians 5:3 tells us that sexual immorality, and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints. And 1 Corinthians 6:18 commands us to flee sexual immorality, for he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Lust, whether acted upon physically through fornication or adultery or indulged mentally through pornography and fantasy, is sin against God and against your own body which is meant to be a temple of the Holy Spirit. James 1:14-15 warns us that each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed, then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death. It will not relieve your boredom, it will bring guilt, shame, bondage and spiritual death, and it will separate you from the joy and peace God wants for you.

Boredom itself is not sin, but how we respond to it reveals what we worship. An idle mind and idle hands give the flesh opportunity, and God wants to fill that space with purpose. Philippians 4:8 urges us to think on whatever things are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and of good report, and Colossians 3:2 tells us to set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Galatians 5:16 gives us the key, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. And 2 Timothy 2:22 says flee from youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and power over sin. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Jesus, we encourage you to confess that you are a sinner in need of a Savior, believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again, and call upon His name to save you and to give you the Holy Spirit to overcome temptation. It is His grace and His Spirit that will enable you to resist.

We encourage you to redeem this season of boredom for God’s glory. Fill the time you once gave to video games with things that feed your spirit and serve others. Hide God’s Word in your heart as Psalm 119:11 says, I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Pray continually, seek fellowship with other Christian believers who will hold you accountable, serve in your church or community, work diligently with your hands, exercise your body, and pursue godly disciplines. God has designed sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and if you desire that intimacy, we pray you will pursue it God’s way through courtship with the goal of marriage to a fellow believer, rather than through sin that will wound your soul.

We also want to remind you of the promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. There is always a way of escape, to turn off the device, to walk away, to pray, to call a brother, to open the Bible.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the boredom and restlessness and the strong temptation toward lust that is pressing in. We ask You to forgive where lust has already been entertained in the heart and to cleanse by the blood of Jesus. Fill this emptiness with Your presence, Your Holy Spirit and Your purpose. Give a hatred for sin and a love for righteousness. Provide the way of escape in every moment of temptation and give strength to take it. Renew the mind through Your Word and transform this time of boredom into a season of growth, discipline and joy in You. Help this one to walk by the Spirit and to find true satisfaction and fun and fulfillment not in the flesh but in knowing You and serving You. Draw this heart closer to Jesus, and if there is any doubt about salvation, reveal Yourself as Savior and Lord today. We trust You to complete the good work You have begun. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to stay in the Word daily, to pray immediately when temptation comes, to flee the sources of lust without hesitation, to seek an older godly man or woman for accountability, and to remember that God is with you and for you in this fight. James 4:7 tells us to be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. You are not alone, and this boredom can become a blessing if you let God use it to make you more like Christ.

We appreciate you being so honest about where you are. Quitting video games a month ago is a real sacrifice, and it makes sense you are feeling that empty space now where that time and stimulation used to be. When boredom sits heavy, turning to lust can feel like a quick way to get some excitement, so we are really glad you reached out for prayer instead of just giving in.

Boredom often is not just about having nothing to do, but about missing purpose and connection. You have cleared out something that was filling a lot of hours, and now there is room that needs to be filled with something better, not just something distracting.

One thing that helps a lot of people in this exact spot is not trying to face the bored moments alone. Would you consider inviting one trusted Christian friend, pastor, or mentor into this struggle this week, someone you can be honest with and text or call when that restless feeling gets strong? Having a simple plan for those windows, like going for a walk, helping with a need at church, finding a local volunteer opportunity, or getting together with others who are pursuing purity, can make the difference between a passing thought and acting on it.

We are praying for you and we will keep praying.

Father, we lift our brother to You and thank You for his honesty and his desire to honor You. Fill the bored and restless places with Your presence and peace. Give him strength to turn away when temptation comes and surround him with trustworthy people to walk with him. Lead him to good ways to use his time and gifts for what is lasting. In Jesus name, Amen.

Your honesty in bringing this struggle into the light is itself a mercy, and I thank you for it. To feel the heaviness of boredom after laying aside one habit is no small trial, and to feel the pull of lust presenting itself as entertainment is a temptation common to many, yet it must be faced with plain truth.

Scripture warns us plainly that when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings forth death. That is the pedigree of sin. It promises pleasure or relief from dullness, but it brings forth dust and death. It will not satisfy the emptiness you feel, it will only deepen it, and leave a spot upon the soul. Purity and charity are the two great garments of the Christian life, and we are called to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. This requires careful self watching, for what a man is, before long, he does. Your very person, your heart, your self is to be kept.

You have prayed rightly, even in few words, for our Lord taught us to pray, Lead us not into temptation. That prayer is the language of humble self distrust. It confesses that without Christ we can do nothing, not even the smallest deed of purity in our own strength. Every grain of self reliance is poison to us. The man who prays Lead us not into temptation and then walks willingly into it is a liar before God. We must not desire trial, nor must we go where temptation is to be found and then ask God to keep us from it. If lust offers itself for fun, we are to flee from it, not to play with it.

Boredom itself can become a snare when time is left empty. Idleness gives occasion for the tempter. The word of God does not leave visitation and service as optional, but calls us to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to be diligent in good works. I would urge you to fill the hours you once gave to games with things that feed the soul and serve others. Give yourself to the Word, to prayer, to honest labour with your hands, to fellowship with faithful believers, to some work of charity that takes you out of yourself. Self examination is needful, but self occupation with Christ is better than merely trying not to think of lust. Look to Christ crucified, who bore our sins and who knows how to succour those who are tempted.

Let me pray for you.

O Lord, who searches the heart and tries the reins, look upon this soul who confesses his weariness and his temptation. Forgive him through the blood of Jesus Christ, the only Saviour, and cleanse him from all sin. Thou knowest how weak we are and how easily we are led astray when we trust ourselves. Work in him a true self loathing for sin and a sincere self distrust, that he may constantly cry, Lead us not into temptation and Deliver us from evil. Keep him unspotted from the world. Fill his empty hours with Thy presence, with love for Thy Word, with love for Thy people, and with useful service for Thy glory. Give him strength to flee youthful lusts and to pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace. Keep his feet from the place of temptation and his heart fixed upon Christ, in whom alone is our strength. In Jesus name, Amen.

Do not remain alone with this. Walk in the light with a faithful pastor or a mature brother in Christ who can know your struggle, ask you how you are, and pray with you often. And when the thought comes that sin would relieve your boredom, remember its end, turn at once to prayer, open the Scriptures, and set your hands to some profitable task. God will not despise the prayer of a humble heart that seeks to be kept pure for His sake.
