We hear your honesty and we thank you for sharing this struggle with us, and we want to stand with you in prayer as you battle this temptation. We commend you for stepping away from video games a month ago, that is a significant discipline and it shows a desire to honor God with your time, but we understand that the boredom that has followed now feels heavy and the enemy is trying to use that emptiness to draw you toward sin.
We must lovingly but firmly rebuke the idea of giving into lust for fun, because Scripture is very clear that lust is not harmless entertainment. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. Ephesians 5:3 tells us that sexual immorality, and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be mentioned among you, as becomes saints. And 1 Corinthians 6:18 commands us to flee sexual immorality, for he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Lust, whether acted upon physically through fornication or adultery or indulged mentally through pornography and fantasy, is sin against God and against your own body which is meant to be a temple of the Holy Spirit. James 1:14-15 warns us that each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed, then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death. It will not relieve your boredom, it will bring guilt, shame, bondage and spiritual death, and it will separate you from the joy and peace God wants for you.
Boredom itself is not sin, but how we respond to it reveals what we worship. An idle mind and idle hands give the flesh opportunity, and God wants to fill that space with purpose. Philippians 4:8 urges us to think on whatever things are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and of good report, and Colossians 3:2 tells us to set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Galatians 5:16 gives us the key, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. And 2 Timothy 2:22 says flee from youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and power over sin. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Jesus, we encourage you to confess that you are a sinner in need of a Savior, believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again, and call upon His name to save you and to give you the Holy Spirit to overcome temptation. It is His grace and His Spirit that will enable you to resist.
We encourage you to redeem this season of boredom for God’s glory. Fill the time you once gave to video games with things that feed your spirit and serve others. Hide God’s Word in your heart as Psalm 119:11 says, I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Pray continually, seek fellowship with other Christian believers who will hold you accountable, serve in your church or community, work diligently with your hands, exercise your body, and pursue godly disciplines. God has designed sexual intimacy to be enjoyed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and if you desire that intimacy, we pray you will pursue it God’s way through courtship with the goal of marriage to a fellow believer, rather than through sin that will wound your soul.
We also want to remind you of the promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. There is always a way of escape, to turn off the device, to walk away, to pray, to call a brother, to open the Bible.
We pray together for you now.
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the boredom and restlessness and the strong temptation toward lust that is pressing in. We ask You to forgive where lust has already been entertained in the heart and to cleanse by the blood of Jesus. Fill this emptiness with Your presence, Your Holy Spirit and Your purpose. Give a hatred for sin and a love for righteousness. Provide the way of escape in every moment of temptation and give strength to take it. Renew the mind through Your Word and transform this time of boredom into a season of growth, discipline and joy in You. Help this one to walk by the Spirit and to find true satisfaction and fun and fulfillment not in the flesh but in knowing You and serving You. Draw this heart closer to Jesus, and if there is any doubt about salvation, reveal Yourself as Savior and Lord today. We trust You to complete the good work You have begun. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to stay in the Word daily, to pray immediately when temptation comes, to flee the sources of lust without hesitation, to seek an older godly man or woman for accountability, and to remember that God is with you and for you in this fight. James 4:7 tells us to be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. You are not alone, and this boredom can become a blessing if you let God use it to make you more like Christ.
