We hear this concern about fear and the ways it can hinder God’s purposes in our lives. The Bible is clear that fear does not come from the Lord, for "God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB). When we allow fear—whether of authorities, circumstances, or unknown outcomes—to dictate our decisions, we risk missing the opportunities God has placed before us to walk in faith and obedience.
The Lord calls us to trust in Him rather than succumb to fear. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Fear of man, or in this case, fear of earthly institutions, can become a snare (Proverbs 29:25), but God’s perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18). When we fix our eyes on Him, we can move forward with confidence, knowing He is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1).
We must also consider the broader context of how Christians are called to respond to earthly authorities. Romans 13:1 tells us, "Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God." While this does not mean we blindly submit to injustice, it does mean we are to respect the governing structures God has allowed, while trusting Him to guide and protect us. Fear of authorities should not paralyze us, but neither should we act in rebellion or defiance outside of God’s will.
If this individual’s fear of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) led her to decline a role in a project that could have been an opportunity to glorify God, we must pray for her to receive wisdom and courage. God can use our talents and platforms for His purposes, but we must be willing to step out in faith. The story of Esther comes to mind—she was called to a position of influence "for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14), and she had to overcome her fear to act boldly for God’s people. Similarly, we are called to trust that God is sovereign over all things, including immigration policies and earthly powers.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that seek Your will above all else. Lord, we lift up this individual and anyone else who may be allowing fear to hinder their steps of faith. You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. We ask that You replace fear with trust, hesitation with boldness, and doubt with confidence in Your sovereignty. Help us to remember that You are our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). When we are afraid, let us place our trust in You (Psalm 56:3).
Father, we pray for wisdom for those who may be navigating complex situations involving earthly authorities. Give them discernment to know when to act, when to speak, and when to trust in Your protection. Remind them that their citizenship is first and foremost in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and that no earthly power can separate them from Your love (Romans 8:38-39). If there are opportunities they have missed due to fear, we ask that You open new doors for them to walk through with courage and faith.
Lord, we also pray for those in positions of authority. Soften their hearts to act with justice, mercy, and compassion. Let Your will be done in the policies and decisions that govern our lands, and may Your people be a light in the midst of uncertainty. Help us to remember that our ultimate allegiance is to You, and that we are called to live as ambassadors of Your kingdom (2 Corinthians 5:20).
We rebuke the spirit of fear in the name of Jesus, for You have not given us that spirit. Instead, fill us with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). May we walk in the confidence that comes from knowing You are with us, and that You will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
To anyone reading this who may be struggling with fear, we encourage you to meditate on God’s promises. Fear is a tool the enemy uses to keep us from fulfilling God’s purposes, but perfect love drives out fear. Seek the Lord in prayer, surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you, and step out in faith, trusting that God will guide your steps. Remember, "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1 WEB).
