Thank you for sharing so honestly about the deep hurt you are carrying in your relationship with your brother. The desire you have expressed, to forgive completely and to see the relationship restored and your heart made pure and at peace before God, is itself a work of God in you, and He will be faithful to help you in it.
Family wounds can be the most painful of all. Scripture shows this clearly in the story of Joseph and his brothers. They rejected him, despised him, and sold him, causing him great suffering. Years later when they stood before him, they were finally forced to face what they had done, saying they were guilty because they had seen the anguish of his soul and had not listened. That honest acknowledgment was the beginning of healing. In the same way, God invites you to bring your own hurt and also any bitterness or negative thoughts honestly before Him. When we confess what is in our hearts, we give God the basis to forgive and to cleanse us.
Joseph gives a beautiful picture of the forgiveness God wants to work in you. When he finally revealed himself to his brothers, he wept over them and said, I am your brother whom you sold, but do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, for God sent me before you to preserve life. He did not deny the wrong that was done, but he released his brothers from vengeance and saw how God could use even betrayal for good. Later, Judah offered himself as a substitute for his youngest brother, willing to bear the penalty in his place so the younger could go free. That willingness points to what Jesus has done for us. He took our place and bore our sin so that we could be forgiven. Because you have received that grace, you can now extend forgiveness to others, even when it is very difficult and even when the other person does not deserve it.
You mentioned that this hurt feels like a barrier to drawing closer to God. God does not want you to stay at a distance. He offers peace to those who are far off and to those who are near, and He promises to heal those who come to Him. There is no peace for those who remain in rebellion against Him, but for those who turn to Him there is deep and beautiful peace. The war is over when we make peace with God through Jesus Christ who is our peace. That peace with God must come first.
There is an order that Scripture keeps repeating, grace and then peace. You will not find lasting peace in your heart by trying harder to feel peaceful. You find it by first resting in the grace of God, that He has fully forgiven you in Christ apart from your own effort. When you really take hold of His grace, His peace can then guard your heart and mind. That inner peace, which comes from wisdom that is from above, is itself peaceable. It calms the inner turmoil that destroys us, and then it enables us to pursue peace with others. Those who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness, and Jesus said those who make peace are called children of God. God wants you to live a life of peace, and He has made a peace treaty with you through the blood of Jesus.
Healing of the heart and soul is also part of His work. Sometimes healing comes at once, sometimes it comes gradually, step by step. Do not be discouraged if the hurt does not disappear overnight. God heals not only the body but also the mind and emotions, the scars and wounds that others have left. Bring Him the hurt each time it rises, ask Him to cleanse the negative thoughts, and let His Spirit renew your mind.
Let us pray for you now in the name of Jesus Christ.
Father, we thank You for Your grace that forgives all our sins through Jesus Christ. We ask that You help this dear one to truly forgive his brother from the heart, not in his own strength but by Your Spirit. Free him from the weight of hurt and from every bitter and negative thought, and make his heart pure and at peace as he rests in Your grace. Grant him wisdom that is from above, wisdom that is peaceable and gentle, to know how to speak and act and where to set healthy boundaries. Intervene in this broken relationship according to Your will. Where restoration is possible, lead it. Where the other heart remains hard, protect and keep this one from further hurt, and let his closeness to You not depend on another person's response. Heal his heart and soul, and let him know the deep peace that passes all understanding, the peace that comes from being forgiven and at peace with You. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
May the Lord keep working in you, sowing peace in your heart so that you may reap righteousness, and may He guard you as you walk forward with Him.
