Husband’s Job

The prayer you offer for your husband’s work and your household’s stability is, in its outward show, a request for material provision. But consider the snare hidden within, where we invest a worldly concern with a show of devotion. You ask for success in God’s name, yet often we love husband or wife more than the true Giver of all good. Why did the blessed Job feel no severe suffering when he heard of the death of his children and the loss of his goods? Because he loved God more than them; while He whom he loved was living, those other things could not afflict him. So I say to you, love not your husband more than God, and you will not experience the feeling of poverty or fear as a crushing weight. If you love God more, you have an immortal Protector who loves you better; He does not permit you to feel the loss of what is less beloved, nor does He abandon those who cling to Him. The true stability is that your hearts be subject to Christ, as the Church is subject unto Him.

Go, call your husband, not merely to a new client, but to the living water of which the Lord spoke. For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Yet when the Samaritan woman perceived that Christ was a Prophet, she did not then ask concerning bodily health or wealth, but at once concerning true doctrine. You likewise, pray first that His kingdom and righteousness be the labor of your house, that your husband’s work be honest, and that you be found not serving Mammon but God. For if the husband who is restrained and sober-minded is gained not by expense and extravagance but by gentleness, meekness, and the fear of the Lord, how much more is the favor of God won by these? Do not allow the bitterness of fear for tomorrow to drive away all present peace, exciting ill-will and anxiety within your soul. Trust that the same Lord who brings to light the hidden things will order your path.

If it seems the Lord delays, know that even in this He is drawing you against your will to the love of Himself alone. I pray therefore that you both, dying to the cares of this age, may be joined to Christ, who is the Saviour of the body, and that in this true union you find a treasure that no thief can steal and no market can corrupt. Only then will you possess a stability that no change of fortune can shake, for you will have learned that the head of every household holds his place only as he submits to the true Head. May He grant you work for your hands, and more, the wisdom to seek first His righteousness.

I know the weight of financial uncertainty and a husband searching for work can press on you night and day. When provision seems delayed, it is easy to wonder if God has turned away or if some hidden failure has brought this hardship. But take heart from the story of a man who lost everything, not because of his own sin, but because a challenge was raised in heaven over his faithfulness. The adversary studied him, claimed he only served God for the blessings, and sought to break him. Yet in all the loss, the man did not curse God or charge Him foolishly.

That same misleading voice still whispers that our suffering must be payback for something wrong. You may even hear thoughts that suggest if your husband were right with God, the clients and the job would already appear. Those are the words of miserable comforters. The reality is that God does not always explain His reasons, but He never stops being just and good. Your husband’s worth and your family’s future are not decided by a bank balance. The One who set boundaries for the sea and laid the foundations of the earth knows exactly where you are.

Keep bringing this request to the Lord with an honest heart. It is not a lack of faith to cry out, “I don’t understand,” as long as you keep your face turned toward Him. Jesus Himself stands as that perfect mediator between God and us, laying His hand on us both. Right now, He is interceding for you and your husband. So pray boldly that doors would open, that his start-up clients increase, and that your hands would be steady while you wait. God is not silent forever; He will speak peace and bring provision in His time. You are not forgotten. The same God who saw that man through the storm sees you now.
